Has anyone here heard or seen the UK Queen tribute band called One Night of Queen with Gary Mullen? They were here in town last night and this guy is simply amazing. He spent a good part of his youth doing karoke to Queen music before his wife and mother secretly sent an audition tape to Star in Their Eyes, the UK version of American Idol. He walked away with the title and started this Queen tribute band.

It's sad the fans of Queen would blow him out of the water for trying to replace Freddie if he ever went the direction of joining Queen, because this guy is a RINGER for Mercury. His stage persona, his voice...omg, his voice is amazing and if you closed your eyes, you'd swear to god Freddie came back to life.

They are on their first ever tour of the US and maybe you could catch a date if you are interested. It's just a high energy fun show with great Queen music. Lot of the singles, they do go deeper in the catalog as well.

I've heard they are good. And think I saw the guy perform on Stars in your eyes. Although that program is not the british American Idol. Its like a saturday night tribute singer program, where the contestants have to dress up and sing like the guy they are trying to be, and who ever sounds and looks most alike wins.

It will definitely be interesting to hear this. You know, as much as I hate the guy, I was really surprised that George Michael didn't end up with this gig. That guy at the Freddie Tribute show was THE most brilliant performer and true-to-Freddie of anyone there. Extreme was good, though Cherone was flat as a pancake. I thought George Michael sang the hell out of his songs there.

The wise thing Brian and Roger done on their last outing with Paul was to carefully choose which songs they would play. We all know that Freddie was gay and that Paul is at the other end of the spectrum, very much a man's man (no pun!! LOL!). The band picked out the harder edged tracks from the Queen catelogue that worked well with Paul's blues/rock roots and for me, it really worked. Sure the songs sounded different, but I viewed this as a good thing.

I was one of the biggest doubters when i heard that Queen were going back on the road without Freddie, but I really wanted to see a full gig myself before passing judgement. I didn't view it as going to see "Queen" in concert, I looked at it for what it was..."Queen & Paul Rodgers". On the back of that gig I ended up buying tickets for a second show and very excited about the up-coming tour and what the first new Queen album in years has to offer.

Bring it on!!! :D

Queen were my first favourite band. And when I heard about Brian & Roger teaming up with Paul Rodgers my initial reaction was, "Noooo! You can't replace Freddie."
Then I realised they weren't trying to, so I felt that was ok. And I like Rodger's voice.
And as PaulUK says, they chose songs Paul could really interpret in his own way.
I like it that they didn't go with a Freddie clone.
If I want to see/hear Freddie I'll play my old CD's and watch my DVD's or go to see a Tribute Band. I like it that they are honouring the legacy but are moving forward too.
That's why I was sold on he JSS/Journey team.
And that's why I'm a bit half-hearted about the Arnel fronted line-up.

You're right, GM was good on this

It's been said a million times what JSS could've done with Journey but he would've been a better fit in Queen. They really could've revitalized the band and added a 3rd or 4th decade to their history. Now, its just ho hum to me.

Paul Rodgers? No way. Having to "pick" songs to fit Rodgers range. That's your first sign.

If I wanna hear Freddie these days, there's Mika.

To me, calling this Queen is like calling The Firm "Led Zepplin" or Bad English being called "Journey." I'm glad at least Schon and Cain were sensible enough to know that John Waite + Journey = New Group and it would never work as "Journey." I hate the way Journey released JSS but I'm sure this is exactly the reason why they decided he wasn't the right fit for "Journey."

I would be much more excited to hear these same guys explore new territory and start a new group – not pretend to be something they aren't. IMO PR leading "Queen" is like putting a square peg in a round hole. I'm a huge fan of everyone involved but, while he's probably one of the best rock vocalists to ever live, Paul Rogers sounds nothing like Freddie and his vocal style is too high and not suited for the type of layered heavily-produced songs Queen is known for.

I would actually really dig Queen with an outstanding vocalist with a big voice that would do justice to their previous catalog while still move them forward (George Michael comes to mind). IMO, they would have every right to do so and I would support them all the way.

No, here's the difference:

Paul Rodgers was Freddie's favorite singer, and he would listen to him before shows to pump himself up. When asked to join Queen, Paul was honored and truly understands the shoes he is filling.

Journey is on singer #3 since Perry, and found somebody who can sing in the same register, but that's about it.

Hey Niggy, didn't know that 'bout Freddie and Rodgers. I like Rodgers for his other stuff though. Love what he did with The Firm.

Welcome back by the way! :D

Thanks for posting that video! That's the Queen magic (no pun intended!) to me. I love Paul Rogers but it's just nowhere close.

Too bad GM's a nut case. That would be the new Queen if he weren't.

Again, it's down to song choice. GM did indeed kick ass on this track, but I really couldn't see him pulling off the more harder edge tracks like "I Want It All", "Tie Your Mother Down", "Hammer To Fall", "We Will Rock You"...etc.

As wildly a succesful combination as it has been he just doesn't sound right to me on Queen material. A square peg in a round hole so to speak.
