Just curious as to what some of you might consider to be the beginning of the concept. IMO, it all started with this. Say what you will about Michael Jackson, but he was really ahead of his time and a true creative genius. Discuss.

I can't believe I'm admitting this, but I actually had a "Beat it" jacket with the zippers. I was a HUGE Michael fan back then! What a dumbass I was! At least Eddie Van Halen made the song a little more "Manly". I think it's funny as hell that Eddie refused to be in the video because he thought it was going to flop! I'm not sure who's further out in left field now...Michael or Eddie?

I remember watching one of MTV's birthday shows when they were crediting the Monkees with making the concept popular. I believe, though, that the concept goes back to the Beatles' Hard Days Night.

As a television show, The Monkees used techniques rarely seen on episodic television. This included characters breaking the fourth wall and talking to the camera (and sometimes even to off-camera studio production staff), fantasy sequences, and abrupt inserts and jump cuts. At least once a week, there was a musical romp which might have nothing to do with the storyline. In retrospect, many episodes included vignettes which now look very much like music videos: short, self-contained films of songs in ways that echoed Beatles' film sequences.

I remember watching those, too (good God, what a cheesy show that was!!), but I guess I should've asked who set the standard for music videos as a whole. The Can You Feel It video had some pretty outstanding effects for it's time. Another one that comes to mind is Devo's Whip It video...lousy production values on that one, but it sticks with you.

As for the Thriller video I'll take the Billie Jean video any day of the week. I don't need a bunch of fucking tippy toer drama fags prancing around in werewolf gear to make me like the song. Just give me the King Of Pop strutting around on an illuminating sidewalk. Videos should be live clips of the band or the band members themselves not a screen play with drama dorks.

PS The Oh Sherrie video sucks. Faithfully, on the other hand, is superb.

People who do drama are fags?..

Probably a bit harsh on my part, but it's been my experience having gone to a liberal arts college and having hung out with some people at Chicago's Colombia College that there's a large contingent of drama majors that are into homosexuality, bisexuality, and weird fucking orgies. Sorry, but that's not how I roll. Not to mention that hollywood is basically a bunch of disillusioned weirdos.
