I tried to post a moment ago but my computer froze up, so...

From BACKSTREETS.COM

DANNY FEDERICI, 1950 - 2008
Danny Federici, the E Street Band's organist and keyboard player since its inception, died this afternoon, April 17, 2008 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City after a three-year battle with melanoma.

The Federici family and the E Street family request that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Danny Federici Melanoma Fund; more details on the Fund will be forthcoming.

The Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band concerts scheduled for Friday in Ft. Lauderdale and Saturday in Orlando are being postponed. Replacement dates will be announced shortly.

We extend our deepest sympathies to Danny's family, friends, bandmates, and blood brothers; we here at Backstreets, and surely all those fans touched by his spirit, mourn with you.

This one is very close to my heart. The way a good many of you feel about Journey, I feel that about Bruce and the E Street band. Silly as it sounds, it's as though I lost a friend. I can only imagine what his family and true friends are feeling. Bruce has played with Danny for 40 years...it must be a devistating loss. I had the pleasure of seeing him perform live a number of times. He was a consumate professional and a damned good musician.

Please pray for his family tonight, if you're so inclined to do so...

Bruce introduces the band (including Dan) in this clip. It was the announcement post that Dan was going to be taking a leave of absence.

He's been with Bruce since they were in high school.

Some topics deserve a response. This one does. This Band gets it. Others don't. That's why this band is special, and maybe is the best in the world.

Danny Federici, for 40 years the E Street Band's organist and keyboard player, died this afternoon, April 17, 2008 at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City after a three year battle with melanoma.

The Federici family and the E Street family request that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Danny Federici Melanoma Fund. A web site for the Fund is being established and we'll post its link when it is on line.

Bruce Springsteen's concerts scheduled for Friday in Ft. Lauderdale and Saturday in Orlando performance are being postponed. Replacement dates will be announced shortly

This, without question is why Bruce has millions of fans, more than any band in the world.

I feel like I just lost a family member. This is so sad. This has really gotten to me.

RIP Danny.

Live hard. Die young.
Rock hard. Live short.
Some people carry on forever.
Some...you just never know.

Life is so strange.
People die every day.
The ones that care about life seem to die younger than others.
This guy was/is an unknown icon.

Not that we should glamourize his death. However, we should celebrate his life.
Celebrate what he did for music...what he did for us.

I for one don't want him to 'rest in peace'. I think he should keep rocking and rolling forever.
This guy lived it ... for sure!

The rest of us can only aspire.

later~

Andrew, I noticed you posted this on the front page. Just wanted to let you know that it isn't all from backstreets- the second half is my own thoughts on Danny. I hope I didn't mis-represent the post. That wasn't my intention...btw- thanks for adding the mention to the front page. It's a nice tribute.

Not quite a household name like a Brad Delp or a Dan Fogelberg, but this hurts just as much because it just shows all of our favorites are getting older and are of course, mortal. All these deaths should make us thankful that some of our favorite bands are out there at all playing the music, even if all of the originals aren't there. At least we get to hear it in some form.

I have tickets to the Tampa, Florida concert on Tuesday April 29 concert (originally was on April 28). This will be their first concert. I am sure it will be an emotional one for Bruce & the rest of the E Street Band.

RIP - Danny!!!

Bruce's comments from his site:

DANNY FEDERICI

"Danny and I worked together for 40 years - he was the most wonderfully fluid keyboard player and a pure natural musician. I loved him very much...we grew up together."
—Bruce Springsteen

There's a great jam with Danny and Bruce at 7:35 in this clip:
