Looking back, it's pretty hard to deny that the band morphed into the very type of nostalgia act Neal dreaded back in 1998.

Jeremey, in your limited interaction with the guys, did you get any sense of their feelings on the Augeri-era?

I didn't really get any sense of any "looking back" or anything like that regarding their career or what's happened to the Journey "Band" as a brand...nostalgia or otherwise. Everyone always spoke very highly of Steve A, and I didn't get a sense of any misgivings in any way that things turned about.

Regarding becoming a nostalgia act, I think - and this is my personal opinion - that the past 8 years in some respect have been humbling to the band about any misconception of stepping outside of their success in the 1980s (synonymously with Steve Perry). Perhaps there was some fire for that early on, but I think the band realizes their place culturally and that they just wrote a bunch of really, really great songs that people relate to, and that they still want to hear. It's like Cain said in the GQ article, I think they are grateful to still be a part of that, and to have those opportunities.

That being said, Cain and Schon both have musical interests outside the Journey sound, which can be found on both of their solo/collaborative efforts over the years. Neal had demos he played that he said, "This isn't Journey music," but he knew he could use it somewhere. I don't think any of the creative forces in the band are under any misconception that they can slap a Journey label on just any type of music and expect it to be accepted by their fan base, or the public in general...And once you've alienated both of them, then what to you have left?

Well, some of you know I've been off of work since 4/29 recovering from sinus surgery, and today I'm finally back at work sitting in my office for the first time in two weeks. Yecghh....

Glad to hear you're feeling better. I really enjoy your contributions to the forum. I've got a question for you. After getting an inside glimpse of the band in the last year and going through the audition process and everything, do you see yourself taking in a Journey show on this tour (assuming no scheduling conflicts or anything)?

On a side note, congrats on the co-writing credit on Never Walk Away. That's cool as hell. It's a great tune.

At the same time, that the music for "Faith in the Heartland" and "Out of Harms Way" were initially tossed JSS's way before going home to Journey, speaks, I think, to the versatility of Neal's playing and just what Journey can be. I like "Never Walk Away" alot, but there's no denying the song was written with the Journey summertime feel-good template in mind. As with the Generations concert-giveaway, the Walmart deal is the latest attempt by the band to court a mainstream audience, yet sometimes I wish they would just let the music be the music. If it comes out of the band, then its Journey. I don't understand the need to stovepipe hooks for future sideprojects. If the Rolie/Perry albums had been used as some sonic benchmark for Journey to meet, much of Escape and Frontiers would probably never hear the light of day. So I hate to think fans are missing out on great new music just because the material doesn't adhere close enough to pre-defined expectations of what Journey should always sound like.

This summer I probably won't catch Journey...The only reason I'd go to a show would be to say hi to the guys in the band and meet Arnel, and I don't know what the likelihood of that happening would be, but there isn't a show within 3 hours of here, and I couldn't fathom sitting through a Cheap Trick and Heart concert, no offense...

I've made the argument both for and against (see my review of Generations, contrasted with my review of the JSS/Journey concert in Columbia SC). All that being said though, I still tend to see things as being a "brand" concept, that if people buy something with the Journey brand on the label, they are expecting a certain product. It's what's kept bands such as Judas Priest, AC/DC, and Aerosmith selling records and keeping their name out there for as long (well, even longer than) Journey.

1. Have you ever, or will you ever hit up Cincinnati, Columbus, or Dayton with your band? I live pretty much right between those three cities and that's the best chance I'd have to see Frontiers.

2. Original material.. I know you've been collaborating with a few others and cooking up some tunes of your own. When's the earliest we can expect a record (other than Journey's new one) with some kind of Jeremey in it, whether it be writing or performing?

Couple questions here..

There is a venue in Columbus that has made an offer but we're working on some routing information. I'll keep you posted!

2. Original material.. I know you've been collaborating with a few others and cooking up some tunes of your own. When's the earliest we can expect a record (other than Journey's new one) with some kind of Jeremey in it, whether it be writing or performing?

I can't see anything coming out until end of the year if not early 2009. I'll begin writing in earnest after the first of June...If I finished a project 3 quarter this year, there'd still be a matter of getting it packaged and distributed etc, and 4th quarter is not a good time to try to sell new music.
