OT: ODD Subway experience!

Postby Rip Rokken » Sun Jun 01, 2008 5:29 am

A few months ago, I quit going to Subway because it seemed I was having a hard time getting out of there for under $12 -- yes, $12! That's a footlong meal deal w/double meat, chips, drink and 3 cookies. If I'm going to spend $12, I'd rather go to a restaurant with table service. But once they started their $5 footlong special, I retrained myself to just eat a regular 12" sammy sans double meat, with no extras (even water, which some charge me $0.23 for). I've been eating at Subway several times a week now, and been loving it again. I'm also staying away from the fattening ones, sticking to the simple sliced meats like turkey or ham.

Now, it appears that every Subway in town has been taken over by Indians, and things have kinda changed a little bit. I have to coax many of them to give me more than 1 napkin in my bag, for instance, or tell them what "lots of lettuce" means. But that's ok... going to Subway has recently become more of a spiritual experience than before, so there is a trade-off. However, tip jars have now been popping up like a plague in several of them, and I just can't bring myself to do it... not in Subway, no, no...

Anyway, I had the most strange encounter today with the Subway closest to my house (and ironically, the one I least often go to). I ordered 2 -- one for me, and one for the Mrs. The person making the sammies was an Indian probably in her mid to late 40's, and when I told her what type of cheese I wanted on mine, she put it all on one side of the sandwich before turning around to grab a new bag of ham. I was curious if she planned on spreading it out across the sandwich and she finally did, to my relief. But then I asked for "lots of lettuce" and tomato, and she put a modest amount of lettuce and 2 slices of tomato on only one half of the sandwich and asked if that was it. I asked if I could please have lettuce and tomato on the other half, and she did so. Now, I usually list out my veggies 2 at a time so I don't overload them, but after each veggie, she would act as if she were about to close it out, so I compensated by ensuring there was constant communication flowing to her, instead of strategic pauses between veggies. I'm always impressed by my ability to adapt in harsh environments, I must say.

Finally, she finishes up both sammies and proceeds to wrap them up in the SAME paper wrapper, so I stopped her and nicely asked if I could have each in its own wrapper. Today, I learned humility and patience, but still not how to tip at Subway. Maybe that level of enlightenment will come on a future visit, but for now, I'm pleased with my progress.

All Subway's must be the same-I have similar experiences here all the time.

It's just a good thing you didn't try to order a Kid's Pack for your little girl-they can never figure those things out!!!! They always ask "what kind of chips do you want?" I tell them I don't want chips-I want yogurt, they look at me like I've just grown a horn out of my head. Next they ask what kind of cookie I want, I tell them we don't want cookies-we want the toy-the are ALWAYS out of the toys so I have to try to negotiate with them to give my girls raisins instead of cookies. They usually give me a run around, until I point out that they are marketing the kid's meals as "healthy" yet they freak out when I decline cookies and chips.

Well Rip, I hope you have a better experience next time-but I doubt you will.

Odd, I've never gotten anything other than quick, decent, friendly service at my several local Subways.

Me too. I'm with Rip on the "loving Subway" part. I ate a 12" Subway Club today. The one at the airport is EXPENSIVE. I ordered my Club and was asked by a friend if I would pick up the Italian BMT or whatever it's called, and both together were over $15.00. The one around the corner has the $5.00 deal, so it's very reasonable. I'm not with Rip complaining about a 0.23 cent cup of fucking water though. Fucker spent a pile of money on a scoop of ice cream in Vegas.   ;) ;) j/k Ripster.

Actually, several here are quite good, and I guess I've gravitated to those. And this may have been an off day at this one. Trust me, I wouldn't keep going back if I wasn't getting fixed up. Subway has come a long way since they really had to start competing with places like Quizznos.

As for that Gelato, that one took me by surprise... LOL! That's what happens when you order before you check the prices.

Hahaha! Same here. Well I'm not exactly huge, but I'm an ex powerlifter that is used to scarfing large quantities of food and toting around a big frame.... I usually just get a footlong and water. 8)

While I understand what you mean, I eat anywhere I want and don't think about that stuff. I refuse to let that kind of stuff bother me. I will say this, however. If I go into an eating establishment and I see bugs or something, I'll leave. I just don't dwell on what I can't see or rumors.

Rip, you crack me up. Years ago I stopped at a Subway late one night and the young kid was mopping the floor, stopped took my order and proceeded to make the sandwich! I turned and walked out. I guess that was before they used plastic gloves.
As for Taco Bell - I have a sister who manages one and she would never allow anything disgusting happening at hers...she's a stickler, and she is always pleasing the customers (even the pain in the butt crazy ones.)

What's up with them being skimpy on the lettuce? It can't be that expensive.

When the 5.00 deal is over, I'll be heading back to Wendy's. I hear they're coming out with some great finger foods.

I do remember one time, and only once, turning around and walking out of a fast food place, and it was a Subway, come to think of it. This was several, several years ago and the kid making my sandwich wasn't wearing gloves and had what appeared to be a few open sores on his hands -- gross!!!!

I've never had problems with Taco Bell, but I'm very picky which ones I will go to. I do have a funny story, though -- used to work occasionally in an E.R., and there was this one doctor there used to eat Taco Bell all the time, but quit cold turkey after he had to "examine" one of their obese female employees... she must have been really nasty... LOL! He's the one who turned me onto "green sauce" (salsa verde, and they always have it available, but don't advertise it). He always asked for bean burritos with green sauce, and to this day I still order them the same way. Good stuff!

I learned quite a bit during the $5 deal... my favorite Subways were loosely wound and would let you order any footlong for $5 (except the true premium subs, of which there are only a couple). Some would falsely define other subs as being "premium" when they were clearly not marked that way on the board, and some practically blacklisted most of the good sammies from the $5 list. Hey, I can undertstand not wanting to lose revenue, but surely their volume went way up. Subway is packed most every time I go in now.

Anyway, the $5 for any footlong deal is gone, but they have what seems to be a $5 special which covers about 5-6 different subs, including Oven Roasted Chicken Breast (McChicken, really) and Black Forest Ham. I've given up the big fattening subs... That's actually a reason I don't go to Quizznos as much anymore -- I just don't need my sandwiches so fancy (and expensive)... LOL!

Rip, Jarrod would be so proud of you!!

I finally found a subway here that isnt indian owned and operated. What you say is right about them, they act like when you ask for extra or a little more, you are taking the food out of their mouth. (oh geesh - just had a gross thought)

Just thought I'd share here...
I took a dump today in a toilet manufactured in switzerland. it was the neatest thing. while trying to follow the "green rules", I took Sheryl Crow's advice and broke off just a single square of toilet paper. Now then, since I've been taking shits for almost forty-two years I feel I'm somewhat experienced in this activity. Usually I can guess fairly close how many squares I'll need to use and today was no exception. I was right (I swear I have this down to a science). My ass biscuit broke off nice and cleanly and the one square was used just to make sure there wasn't any extra spatter on my bottom. Anyone else have this down to a science?
