OT - 38 Special

Postby weatherman90 » Tue Jun 10, 2008 12:14 pm

Don't really see a place to discuss 38 Special anywhere. I'm heading to see them on Thursday and I just wanted to get the scoop on the band.

I started listening to their greatest hits and they have some good stuff - and I didn't realize that a lot of their hits were co-written by Jim Peterik.

It looks like they lost a few original members along the way but they still have Don Barnes, Larry Junstrom, and Donnie Van Zant.

Anyone else seen the band recently? I can't seem to even find a set list.

Although I didn't care for their last album "Drivetrain", they still have the goods live. You'll have a blast without a doubt.

I saw them a few years back here in Chicago, and Jim Peterik showed up and jammed with them. It was a great show.

I live in a very small city outside of Orlando and they will be playing at our founder's day festival for free. Our city is paying for them to play here. Normally they end up with up and coming country singers or some semi-known ones and this year decided to go bigger. I have no idea what they will do with all the people that may come into our little town for that. I really don't think they have any idea what they've done!

I didn't know Barnes was still with them. Last time I heard anything from them was with a different lead singer and it was some easy listening song. I wanted to barf. I love their older stuff though. Saw them in the early '80's and had a great time.

Barnes returned to the band quite some time ago. Well over 10 years at this point.

They were in Fort Worth in April at the Stockyards. I wish I had known. BUT, they'll be at the Glass Cactus in Grapevine in September. :D

That was Max Carl, and the song was "Second Chance," which might have sucked but was a #1 hit for the group on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart.

Max is now with Grand Funk Railroad. He and former KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick joined GFR when Mark Farner left.

And yes, they do perform "Second Chance" in their set... 8)

Hey, I have a great idea... get them to host Skynnard along with them, and that should be enough to draw all the rednecks out of Arkansas, like moths to a flame. We'll evolve another 10 years overnight!

I've seen .38 Special three times and they bored me to tears. Very unenthusiastic delivery...nothing off Tour De Force. VERY disappointing each time.
But around town, it was well known...when they got home at night
Their fat and psychopathic wives
Would thrash them within inches of their lives!

The thing I didn't like was that both times I saw them, they had a medly of like, 4-5 songs, and they played just a little bit of each. Would have loved to have heard "Teacher, Teacher" and "Second Chance" in full.

The funniest thing I've heard about .38 Special is that, apparently, they don't even plug in (and/or turn up) Donnie Van Zant's guitar. He's not a bad singer, but I believe the only reason he was in the band to begin with was his name. Don Barnes can carry them, vocally.

Do they still have two drummers?

That's too bad. I was hoping to at least hear 20th Century Fox. It looks like they played it on their live Strugis DVD back in 1999 along with Back Where You Belong.

I can live with this set list, but it would be nice to have some of the Tour de Force in there. They're playing 2 from Strength in Numbers

Thanks for posting the set list!
