Major Arnel Lovin' on the Waves

Postby Rhiannon » Thu Jun 26, 2008 9:24 am

Twilight Zone evening commute... at 5:20, a local Chicago classic rock station (97.1 the Drive) played "Lights". Afterwards, the DJ went into a few minute long spill about Arnel, who he is, where he's from, how the band found him... basically recounted the entire People article on the air. Threw in a fat concert promo for the September show in Tinley and a plug for the new album.

The next song was that one Police song that nauseates me, so I turn it.

I flip over to 100.3 and there's Separate Ways playing! ...Again, this DJ also gives a prop to our boy Arnie. Be it more concise.

I'm thinking the whole time "Christ! I can't get away from this band!"...

Anyhow, I thought it was sweet-ass. I bet there's a slight spike in album sales in the greater Chicago area today after those two gratuitous plugs. I still wish, however, the new singles would get a few spins here and there. If they'll play that tardey Police song, surely they can play some Arnel.

I was at the pool over the weekend and they played Lights over the speakers. I was shocked when they followed that by "Never Walk Away"!! That is the first time I've EVER heard a 'new' Journey song on the radio. It was too noisy there so I couldn't tell you if they spoke of Arnel or not.

The "mix" station that they play at my workplace has been playing 5-6 random Journey songs per day it seems, including both NWA and AATY.

Intense.

That's awesome news for the band! I was driving to work yesterday, and the radio station in Columbia SC, was raving about the "New Singer", and also recounted how he was discovered. They also went into the fact that everyone at the radio station had bought it, loved it, and the general consesus in the building was that they really like the re-records too!

The funny thing is, I'm friends with the morning personality who said this. He had told me just 2 weeks earlier, "ehhh I heard the ballad, but I'm just not really excited by it!". I called him after he said the whole Journey thing on the radio, and said "I thought you said you weren't really digging it?" He started laughing, and said he should have known better then to doubt me!

Then about 30 minutes later, I heard them introduce the new Foreigner song "Too Late". I hadn't heard it before, but DAMN I love that song!!! With Lou out of the picture, Kelly is by far the absolute closest anyone could possibly come! He sounds so much like Lou on that song it's scary. I got on Amazon last night and bought the download! Kick-ass tune.
The artist formerly known as Jim. :-)

Did either of these "gushing DJ's" play the Arnel versions of the songs? If not, they need to stop paying lip service and play some fucking Arnel Journey songs!

Fuck no. And I agree. Maybe not his versions of the songs, but his own songs with the band for sure. :)
