Rhainnon raised a fair point one time. Why is it with "Frig and 'Fro" gay, midget, alimony, 3rd world singer, and any other kind of jokes are cracked here every 4.3 minutes the whole board laughs in unison?

but perry gets picked on for behaving like a sabatuer in the band or someone says they didn't see the magic in the lineup prior to this one and out comes a lynch mob going "Why are ALWAYS bashing perry/JSS, god get OVER IT!!!!"

He said that he was inflexible and diva-ish during the ROR sessions. That the experience taught him that sometimes you just have to be a professional and suck it up and do the job you were hired to do. Also - that you could still be artistic even within tight parameters and that was all part of the challenge.

I guess I'll have to track down the interview because so many people on this forum have this great emotional investment in him being a blameless martyr....but for now I hope you'll take my word for it.

Did I miss your Perry Appreciation Thread Tito? Or do we have to celebrate every member of the Journey organisation - including the guy who made the tea in 1975 - before we get to the main man?

[quote="Saint John"] "He had no right to deconstruct anything. He was hired and did what he was hired to do...sing. "

To quote Kevin Elson about ROR ...."It was Steve's baby". THEY wanted him to do whatever he thought would make them $$$. Obviously it worked or they wouldn't be touring those hits today. Whatever else happened is totally irrevelant in the grand scheme of things. He made the Journey name a household word. Nothing else matters, since today Journey is still using that fame to make their living. Give it up, SJ. Perry more than did his job. He made them all rich.

"Funny how Neal is quotable and has credibility at your convenience. Herbie was the source of ALL of the success. Comprende?? ALL of it. Perry took over, for all intents and purposes, around 1984. How'd that go?"

Credible quotes from Neal on BTM for what he thought of Perry's contribution to Journey, which is obvious to most people, even Neal on that particular day. Other than that, he has proven he has zero credibility. I guess he's trying to clean that up nowdays. Good for him.
Herbie? He was a great manager and innovator, which contributed heavily to their early success...BUT.... without that voice, Journey was goin' NOwhere. (unless that was Herbie singin' all those Journey tunes and pushing his voice to the brink every night onstage) You did say Herbie was ALL of it, right? LOL
How did it go when Perry took over in 1984? Pretty damn great! Care to guess how many hits they had?

"Their was no passing of the torch. Just a bitter fuck that couldn't see the band move on without him because HE did NOT take care of himself."

Pass the torch? Now that was pretty damn funny! He wanted to avoid surgeons ripping his side off and replacing it with titanium. Yeah, that sounds like something I'd dive right into! I might consider taking a year and a month to make sure that was really necessary. Meanwhile, Schon & Cain are shopping for singers, salivating at their platinum CD and what the Perry gravy train tour could rake in, IF he just went under the knife right away. And you want him to pass the torch?? Good call, SJ!
Where did you get the idea that he didn't take care of himself? You can write some really slammin' fiction, dude.

"They were Journey before Perry and are still Journey after Perry."
Yeah, it was a great name. It used to equate quality.

"Sorry, but Journey has a defined sound and that sound is wrapped around a high tenor. They'd have to completely deviate from what they have done best for OVER 25 years and at this point that's simply ridiculous."

It's not just about a voice, whether it is high tenor, tenor, or baritone. Their "defined sound" was created by three guys that WROTE all the material from their own experiences. It's not just about having a tenor voice in Journey. It's about creativity within the unit, and that INCLUDES the singer. They've had no writing chemistry with anybody since Perry and didn't give Soto a chance to do that. There is something seriously missing in Journey today, and that's the third writing partner. Perry wrote knowing HE was going to be singing that stuff, so to write melodies as good as those in the greatest hits, won't be done by just anybody. Therefore.... ...they might as welll deviate from their OVER 25 year old formula, cause it will NEVER be remotely close to the same. Augeri, Soto, Pineda.....all fine singers in their own right, but where is the writing chemistry? There's something missing on Revelation. Wonder what it is? 8)

Perry will never return to Journey and Journey will never be the same. I do believe that Perry will come out with something when he feels it's right not when the fans feel it's right. I agree that what is missing is in the writing. It's whatever happen when you put Steve, Jon, Neal together in a room and told them to come up with something. They would come up with something. We all know that Steve is a good business man. He was the man who wanted to take Journey to places that Journey could only dream of. But I know that when you have a medical problem. Surgery is not the first or best answer. Steve Perry did what he needed to do. The fact that his "friends"/ band mates couldn't wait is not Steve's problem. That magic could have continued. But it didn't and it will never happen again. I just want to hear Steve Perry sing again. I want to sit in a seat and watch him perform. Just once at least. But when he's ready. Not because I want him to.

The only thing "hot" that perry is working on, is his dinner. I'll eat a freshly made diaper bomb produced by a terminally ill 2-month old baby if he actually comes out with anything at all....Perry's getting all his big-named peeps and paid-for bullhorns to put out there that he's working on music....just so he can indirectly dispell any rumors that he is either *in* journey or *returning* to journey.

I love how evil you're making the fella out to be. I doubt that most of this is the case, and whether this year or beyond, I do believe that Steve Perry will release a record and it WILL go platinum, and most here shall be pleased.

Actually, Im *not* trying to make the guy be evil or anything like that...
I simply do not believe he's back in the music business for anything other than collecting (and sometimes endorsing and cashing) his royalty checks...He's gone folks, get over it. Nothing that can be said by various members of the insane asylum, American idol judges, or George Dubya Bush can say to change that.

Keep in mind, the more Perry goes "Hey, remember me, I still think about touring!! really...I do!! " The less people can doubt the fact he's no longer in the group. Remember, Perry forced the band to put up signs all over their gigs to remind people that Steve Perry was no longer singing with Journey.....AFAIK, Perry no longer has any legal power to force such an issue....this is his way of putting it in peoples mind....

I'd eat shit if he actually releases something in the next year or two....or hell...ever....he's gone folks....live with it and move on. Your husband's will thank you....really....

I personally believe that Perry was never really in it for the money nor is he still. Well, not entirely.

Every artist has got to be in it for the money in some fraction.. but Perry seems more personally-driven than alot of other artists in this particular corner of the industry. If he was truly in it for the money he would've kept putting out albums through the 90s and beyond, no matter how much of a shadow of his 78-86 voice he may have had.

I'm SO gonna enjoy laughing my balls off when both Steve Perry AND DDY come back to their respective bands for their "ride off into the sunset / 401K" tours. It will happen...it's just a matter of time. And quite frankly, I could give a shit at this point. The last two Perry Journey albums were 80 % garbage in my book (and STYX fans, don't get me started on BRAVE NEW WORLD- uuuggghhhhH!) but - nobody can walk away from that kinda dough and glory forever...except maybe ABBA. But I think they're actually space aliens...or robots.

Nah, all that happened when I moved on was my husband was subjected to a few rants and then I "Journey'd On" with SA.

Then I subjected him to a couple of "dammit" rants when I heard SA was sick, but I was going to see "that new guy" anyway, and "Journey'd On"

That subjected him to two years of "JSS-wow" and "JSS-oh-my-GOD!" that is still going on.

Then JSS was gone and he was subjected to two years of "Neal-is-this" and "Friga-is-that" which is still going on and I wasn't gonna "Journey On" no more!

Now I'm waiting for Revelation to come in the mail.

So, basically, my husband did not thank me.... :D

Steve Perry has shown a penchant for dropping little hints here and there, going back as far as the BTM if not before that.

I'll believe he's back when a disc hits the public or he hits the stage for a tour.

Until then, he's still the Portuguese Hermit to me.... holed up in his shack writing his Journey Manifesto.
