The comparison with Steve Perry is natural. How could you not expect it? Perry was an icon in his heyday, and his legacy is set. But Arnel is a fantastic singer in his own right, and was given a near-impossible task: fill Perry's big shoes, and pull-together the fan-base who were (rightfully) frustrated, disappointed, and angry after the rotation (and dismissal) of singers from Augeri to Soto. Arnel has (by his second concert) managed to succeed in that role. I give the guy some big kudos for what he's done so far.
The success of 'Revelation' and this tour will allow Journey and Arnel to have a little breathing room. Arnel will be able to stand more on his own voice and songs on the next CD ...... The comparison with Perry won't end this tour or next. But Arnel and Journey are on their way to having some successful post-Perry songs that should stand on their own merits .....
Comparing Arnel to Perry is understandable. Saying Arnel has eclipsed Steve Perry in talent is bordering on deranged. I'm thrilled that the critics are loving Arnel, but I'm guessing they have never had the privilege of seeing Steve Perry with Journey. If they had, they couldn't possibly make a comment like this with a straight face.
I agree that comparing Arnel to Perry is in his prime is a vast stretch, but I'm
loving the fact that people, whether informed or not, are seemingly remembering Perry as nothing more than a "good" singer from back in the day. Perry destroyed his
own image with the masses over the last 20 years and will probably forever be remembered as "the guy that used to sing for Journey." He had a chance to cement his legacy, leave graciously and be
remembered. Instead, the masses couldn't tell you if he's still performing, retired, institutionalized or dead. His legacy with the hardcores is that of probably the greatest singer of all-time. He's certainly the best of
I've ever heard. But to the masses he's an irrelevant recluse whose whereabouts are unknown and I doubt if they honestly give a shit. He's become an afterthought in the rock and roll universe. And it's all of his own doing. That's the best part. No amount of bullhorning will change that, either.
