Shockey is a decent player but I've always thought he was a bit overrated.

You are not kidding. What a crybaby. Never cared for that guy.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

In NFL years, yes...28 is "old", sadly enough. That said, Shockey is more washed up, than he is old. He's a whiny bitch, whose mouth has never matched his talent! He's a VERY average player, who was a FAR more dominant college player, than he's ever been with the big boys in the NFL!

28 is not REALLY old even in the NFL.
Given that, Shockey is one of the most "Maximum Effort" players I've ever seen and never backed down from a single solitary confrontation, in fact often initiated them with with bigger stronger players against conventional wisdom.

As a Penn State fan I HATED seeing him and Miami come into University Park and beat Penn State in 2001 while he talked trash after every ball Ken Dorsey completed to him.

Watching him as an Eagles fan in the NFC in the intervenening years I've grown to realize what an absolute stud and total warrior this guy was in his Jr, Sr years @ The U and his first 3 years in the Pros. Unfortunately it seems to have taken a toll and he hasn't been his old self in what SEEMS like a long while :
I can recall a period where he was SO good (like a new Bavaro up there) that the Gints would have Penn State's Kerry Collins literally FORCE him the ball open or not, in traffic or not on about 50 % of their pass plays.
Took a big toll, but that's how good, tough and mean he was.

Wishing him the best of luck in NO.
