I think you're right. It's a different sounding album, but I like it a lot. It sounds like it's at the turning point between old Journey and the new Escape sound that was about to show up with Cain.

Neal's dad (Matthew Schon) also provided strings on parts of the Departure album. I am thinking of Good Morning Girl specifically, although I'm sure there are more. The title track (Departure) gave some hints of what was to come with Dream After Dream. There are some rough boots out there from the first Escape shows in Japan where they play one or two instrumentals from that record, as well as a Baby's track (Too Far Gone) with JC on vocals. It's one of my favorite boots because it is different from just about every other post-Rolie boot out there. Wish I bad a better version of the video.

I do recall that Neal's dad worked the string arangements.

For years I loved this album but knew nothing about it's origins. It was the one question I wanted to ask the guys for years: "What were you ON when you recorded this?!?!?"

I always thought this was as close to a "pre-Perry era" album WITH Perry as we would get. Remember what it was like when you heard some of the pre-Perry stuff on the Infinity Tour with Perry harmonizing...sounded pretty damn good!

To be honest those were two of my least favorite Baby's songs, and ironically JC didn't seem to be write them with a keyboard either...

WOW, Eric, I knew Matthew Schon had a part in Dream After Dream but no clue about his involvement in Departure. I'm sure that's one cool boot you have, wish I had something to trade.

At any rate, Neal has some fantastic musical gens in his past. His mom sang with Matthew's band back in the day.

I own that album in lp form. I cherrish it. I think I read where Schon's dad arranged the orchestral part of the music. I love Destiny and Little girl. Some of the music is haunting and soothing just to hear the instrumentals. Nice to remember.

I agree, the studio versions weren't that good. Other Baby's songs are alot better. However, I actually like the live version of those two songs. Too For Gone more than Tokyo though.
