I totally agree, and this is not speculation because it came from HH own mouth.

So basically what you are saying is that the singer sells out to be in the band. Because individually, the solo effort would just be something that the singer is into, and not something that would be profitable, or creatively viable. In other words, the singer really doesn't want to siing the style that the band is putting out - only does so because it is popular and makes him money. He'd much rather sing the stuff on his solo album - even though it is of lesser quality, and the masses really aren't diggin' it....but since he is who he is, corporate types just cater to him and let him release such non-mainstream material.....[/quote]

i think if most artists would admit it they all bend a little from thier initial ideal of thier style journey went from a fusion band to a pop band

Except Schon and Cain were the first to start work on the record and experiment with a new direction....

True...but Rutherford's signature style in Genesis would only be recognised by hardcore fans....and he was a guitarist and not a vocalist. It was much easier for him to do something a bit different. Whereas Collins was the voice of Genesis and by the time Invisible Touch came out there wasn't a huge difference between what he was doing solo and what he was doing in the band. Much like Peter Cetera's first solo album - which was much the same as Chicago 17 but minus the horn section.

I guess Genesis, Chicago and Journey are very similar in this respect because they all started out playing progressive/jazz rock and all ended up in the adult contemporary market with singers who pretty much defined their entire sound and image.

Some people just refuse to accept this no matter how many times you bring it to their attention. Perry is bigger than life in the fall guy persona.

I thought that you left for good, Matt. This place needs all the true historians it can get. Was I just maybe missing your threads?

Those ATW songs that were released on Perry's greatest hits album were way below Journey standards in my opinion. Terrible tunes. He sung fine, though raspy, but I could never see Journey doing those songs. They were Perry solo tunes, pure and simple. Some of his other tracks Melody (great song) and If U Need Me were good, but stuff like When You're in Love for the First Time and Summer of Luv stunk. I couldn't believe that he penned those songs.

I know what you are saying and I totally agree with it. I just thought I would have a litte fun with your post.

Arianddu wrote:Neal Schon wanted to work with Jan Hammer because he saw a guy who, in NS's words, played a keyboard like it was a guitar. They worked together, Neal obviously felt good about it and got something from it that he didn't/couldn't get from Journey or Jon Cain. Can you honestly say that Neal Schon values Journey less? That he sold out to stay with it?

YES. We all know Journey is his "bread and butter". We all know that Neal wants to rock more. We all know that he has been unhappy for MANY years at the confines being in Journey presents. But he continues with it because it affords him the opportunity and financing for his side projects (and his marriages! ;) ) (I know he stated his guitar was singing Journey again, but he has criticized the Journey sound and limits for years!)

Arianddu wrote:Sure, the solo effort may not be the commercial hit that the group effort was, but I haven't heard anything that says any of those solo efforts lost money, they just didn't sell as well as Journey..

Soul SirkUS supposedly lost Neal over $300,000.

Ah, blow my theory out of the water, why don't ya? :D
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!
