Explain something to me?

I enjoy lots of music and often hear something called, a hook talked about. Can of one you artists tell me exactly what that is?

A hook or a catch is just what makes a song catchy. Melodic rock is, for the most part, all about hooks. It is often a chorus, but not always. Usually it's a vocal hook, but it can occasionally be an instrumental hook like a catchy riff or great solo - I'd argue that the guitar solo in Who's Cryin Now, for example, is just as much of a hook as the actual chorus (if not more so).

It is a cool riff ,series of notes That are usually played throught out the song. like the intro to Faithfully, and the Piano part that plays through out Turn Down The World Tonight. I hope that helps

For most people songs like “More than a feeling” have both types, catchy chorus and guitar riffs.

A hook can be anything from a cool riff, to a surprising turn in the song, to a neat vocal passage, to a really catchy chorus, to whatever.

The idea behind a hook, in a songwriters context, is something that grabs the listener and doesn't let go. It doesn't matter about the type of music...a hook is about something in the song that grabs the listener.

Wildfire, right next to the definition of "Hook" (with respect to song) in every dictionary in print, should be a picture of Def Leppard's Hysteria. The entire album is loaded with more hooks than a tacklebox.

Amen to that.

99% of the time, the "hook" is also the part of the song you can't get out of your head. Could be the chorus, a catchy verse or an incredibly catchy musical phrase.

No, "Photograph" is on "Pyromania"...another phenomenal album! I do agree with Frank that "Hysteria" was hook after hook, which is why it is one of the most successful albums by any band, EVER! I view a "hook" as exactly what it sounds like...lyrics or a riff that hook you, the listener! Most songs don't become successful without a hook. Journey built a career on "hooks"!

Tons of hooks in country music. Probably the biggest - "She got the gold mine, I got the shaft."

In the interest of full disclosure, I find country music to be nauseating. Now that we have that out of the way...Isn't it "she" who is supposed to be getting the "shaft"

Prime example...

"Will she go or will she stay? Fool herself for one more day...."

Just ask anyone who walked out of the music center with me on Saturday... could NOT get that out of my head and I been walking around singing it. And it's been in there all day today too.
