Out now is the new book Sounds Like Teen Spirit: Stolen Melodies, Ripped-Off Riffs And the Secret History of Rock and Roll by author Tim English. The book chronicles the various instances in which rock songs have accidentally, and sometimes deliberately, "borrowed from past hits."

Among the songs compared and analyzed for their similarities are:

George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" and the Chiffons' "He So Fine."
Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock" and Hank Williams' "Move It On Over."
The guitar riff from Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Boston's "More Than A Feeling."
Bob Marley's "Buffalo Soldier" and the "Tra La La Song," which was the theme to the late '60s children's show, The Banana Splits.
U2's "Beautiful Day" and an obscure A-ha hit from the 1980's.
Ray Parker Jr.'s "Ghostbusters" and Huey Lewis and the News's "I Want A New Drug," and many more.

Smells Like's main riff is similar to the chorus riff of Boston's More than but it's a totally different key. It's not really a rip off the way My Sweet Lord stole from the Chiffons, or Ray Parker ripped off Huey-those are true note for note ripoffs.

There are parts in A-Ha's "Sun always shines on TV" that also sound like Coldplay's "Vida La Vida". Specifically, at 1:04 to 1:30 in this clip.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYeFWmc21Fc&

So they got the riff from Satriani & the vocals from Aha. Vida should be called "Stealin la music".

It sounds more like Vida then Beautiful day although I can see a similarity there too.

The Smells and More than a Feeling comparison is retarded.

I found that the song By Lionel Richie "stuck on you" sounds like Eric Claptons song "Wonderful Tonight" the same guitar riff

When I hear Daughtry's What About Now, I cant help but think of Heart's Alone. Its not that similar, and then quickly changes but just the very beginning.

Also, an "odd" coincidence...

The band Black N Blue was produced by Gene Simmons back in the day. In 1986 they released an album called Nasty Nasty. In 1992, Kiss released their Revenge CD with a tune called Domino that was basically a riff for riff ripoff, lyrically similar as well as the structure of the song:

I'm not convinced about McCready and Ace....both play Les Paul Customs - so perhaps the tone is making you think they are the same. As far as the Doors - BOOOORING.....I don't see ANY resemblance to Ace there.

Everything was stolen from Franz Joseph Haydn, anyway. So it's ALL derivative.
But around town, it was well known...when they got home at night
Their fat and psychopathic wives
Would thrash them within inches of their lives!
