I'm still worried about Deb, but at least Corpus isn't getting hit straight on.

Dan...........don't forget my phone call this afternoon. 8)

And Corpus will be on the "good" side of the storm. I laugh when they say that, the "good" side. Like there is a good side to a hurricane! That side has less tornadoes I guess, and less rain.

They're seriously saying that about Galveston?!? OMG... :?

PS... I can't stand Geraldo.

Yeah I heard it was supposed to hit the "Houston / Galveson" area, but that was the last I paid attention because I didn't get to see the news this a.m.

PS... so do I. :x

Geraldo sucks for sure, but the "certain death" quote came from the National Weather Service talking specifically about areas of Galveston unprotected by the Seawall. It was the headline in mainstream media last night.

Depending on what track the storm takes, that may just not be true. I was in Houston during Alicia in 1983 (with an 8th month old baby). The storm went into Galveston and headed right up the ship channel. The eye passed right over me. The wind blew so hard that it drove rain through the microscopic cracks around the windows in a brick suburban house (it looked like it was coming straight through the wall). I can still hear the unearthly howl of the wind that went on for hours. No power for days (weeks for some areas), all the utilities poles down, roofs off of houses. Glass from the skyscrapers in downtown Houston covering the streets. Massive flooding. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Alicia

That's true! We live in Orlando, which is considered inland, and we had 3 within 3 weeks a few years back, a couple of which where the eye went through too, and it was horrible. I mean we stayed but we had wind driven rain coming through our windows too, and wet carpets everywhere. My part of town was lucky not to lose power for a long time, but several areas did. And huge oak trees in some areas, that had been there for 50 plus years just toppled over. We were amazed at the damage that could be done this far inland.

Hope everything will be okay Linda! I'll be thinking about you!! Good you are leaving!

Thanks, Lynn; you guys definitely could teach Hurricane 101 after all Florida has been through in the last few years. :(

Wow. I hope everyone is able to get to safety. Their poor homes and lives... that's just so sad. :(

I was flipping through the news channels earlier...

....and FOX News was showing a bar out on the coast in Galveston. Over 30 people were there partying in the storm, waving at the camera. The anchor was talking to the owner and was all like "you and your patrons are going to die. Do you realize this?" After they hung up the conversation, the anchor said "Such stupid, stupid people."

Most of the time I HATE FOX news but this time around I actually agreed with them!!!

From the BBC

Some residents were ignoring the dire warnings in Galveston, where Ike threatens to bring a 20ft (7m) high storm surge.

"If it ain't your time you ain't going anywhere," Emory Sallie, 44, told AP news agency, while walking and drinking a beer near his home."

Another potential Darwin Award winner there. :(

I'm in NYC about to get on a cruise ship; my kids in College Station are fine, just rain and wind. But almost all of the Houston area and points south and east are without power and will be for a while. Recovery will be long and slow.

Arnel mentioned the fans in Texas in his chat today, so I thought I'd post it here:

Knellsky: and lets also pray for all the people of texas
Knellsky: i know what theyre going through right now
Bblmt: Arnel the plockers from texas have let us know they are ok
Knellsky: thats a big relief to know
Knellsky: lets pray that this trial will make them stronger and more resilient

Hope everyone made it thru ok, and we are planning a Plokker get-together in TX hopefully at the end of October, and all peeps are invited (whether you live in TX or not). More to come soon as it takes shape.

make it after we get back from Firefest please. :D

my granddarlings are out of power and they have a tree on their house with a power line under the tree to boot. the tree was uprooted and just set on the roof. 'Darling', the 8 yr old, says she can't believe we live on the bay and have no debris. no twigs, no branches nothing. she sez not even a leaf??? nope.

thanks ARNEL!!

Linda, our beach is pretty clean but the pier fell through--the frame is there but not the walkway.

my Def Lep friend is without power in Magnolia, TX as is her neighborhood of about 100. all the trees fell on ONE house. weird.

we are getting some rain now and I just heard lightening hit something! gotta go....... i still have my boards on my windows. yay.

Glad everyone is ok though. Sorry about the damage.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

YIKES!!!! Wow, that IS Firefest weekend, isn't it? I don't think delaying another week or two will be a problem, especially if it means you would be able to come. I'll mention that on the site.

Glad you made it unscathed but am so sorry for your grandkids... I talked to a Houston plokker yesterday who is without power and water for 2 WEEKS, and she didn't seem to mind -- said she was used to "survival mode". I'd go nuts!

Yes, still have boards on your windows, and on your computer, too! What would I do without my boards?

Has someone done a roll call?
Is everyone who is in the hurricane zones ok?

I really must get a map and mark on it where everyone is situated.

Wireless internet on a ship; is this cool or what?

Would be up for a Texas plokkerfest ... as Deb said, assuming the UK doesn't do us in.

Thanks for all the kind wishes, folks.
