I'm not sure either, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw and thought about that. Coming in, guns blazing, on post number one is either just a really dumb move or meant for nothing more than stirring folks up which in turn is, a really dumb move.
The thread topic sucks a pig's ass.

On one early boot from Japan he sounded like Michael McDonald.

There is no comparison between the two. Augieri had a slightly above average voice.
Arnel is one in a million.
No one's denying that.
I am.
Arnel has a great voice, but he aint one in a million.
Steve Perry was 'One in a million'.

I was saying no one is denying the difference in vocal types between Augeri and Arnel. Augeri has more time with Journey then Perry if you subtract SP's jaunts into hermitsville, so it was only natural that his voice would suffer with that catalogue. I was annoyed that this first post was done a s a negative, which tells me this person is not a Journey fan, maybe an Arnel fan, but not a Journey fan.

Right, and Priest Holmes had a longer career than Jim Brown! Guess which one is in the Hall of Fame? Longevity means absolutely NOTHING! I'll take brilliance over mediocrity 100 out of 100 times, even if it's for a shorter duration!Gunbot wrote:. This position has always annoyed me, because Jackass Talk was built around the premise that if you're remotely critical about ANY member of "Journey", then you can't possibly be a fan. That is total bullshit! I was always critical of Augeri, and turned out of be proven correct. That doesn't make me any less of a fan than someone who is diddling themselves to the dude's red leather pants or getting starry eyes over his Jheri curls!

I'm not saying he was even half as good as Perry, I'm talking about his voice blowing out because of his length of time singing with the band in a range that wasn't natural for him.
On the second point, I'm not saying don't criticize the band, but if you're first post on the board is slamming one of the lead singers before you have established anything about yourself or why you're attracted to the band wouldn't you expect to get slammed. I mean if my first post to the board was " Hi, I'm new here. Arnel is so much better then Steve Perry, you people need to get over it, look at this performance. Steve just sucks ass" I think I would get fucked over and over by everyone here.

Why do people do this to themselves, and to the rest of us? The group I was with decided half way through the song it was time to move on to the next place. I think the guy single handily caused the bar to empty by 9pm.

He fulfilled what was required of him and did it with grace... a talented and a great man.
This video might not do him justice and it pains to see such a good man struggles and gives his last best shot for the fans. He did it anyway..same as Arnel during the last stretch of this 08 Tour..he is struggling but kept on going..flu, acid reflux or what ever it was. That is why we all love and long for Journey..its every mans tenacity and dedication to do his goddamn best everyday and everynight of their performance..no gimmick no fanfare just Journey music from start to finish..
I just hope that the current line up will realized that fans will stick to them no matter what and just learn to slow down a little,,and for Arnel we will understand if he will step it down a half key lower just to preserve his voice and just go on with his natural voice range..
Keep on Rockin..

Agree 100%!! And let's not forget that this is far from a pro-shot clip. I saw clips from the show I saw at the NYS Fair this summer with Arnel the next morning and it didn't sound anywhere as good as it did at the show. This is maybe not Augeri's best performance by a long shot, but it's not that bad.
Anyway, I had to speak up to agree with this post. I have said this ad nauseum on this board, but Steve Augeri walked into one of the most unenviable spots in rock and roll, having to fill a legend's shoes, and did so with style and grace. He gave all he had, and was nothing but a class act to every fan he met. I have never heard one negative word from anyone who has met him. And the man has talent. He was tremendous on "Arrival" and for several tours. His voice is back, and I can't wait until TS II finally comes out.

why do you say that? Arnel's got a huge backlog of bar gigs (lasting far longer than any Journey show) and has more now than Augeri did at the beginning of his run with Journey. Hey, I love Augeri. Great guy and I backed him all the way, but Arnel is twice the singer that SA was. I saw Augeri at the Gorge in 98 or 2000 and it was clear then, that Journey's material (particularly DSB) was hard for him. I just saw Arnel when he was up near Seattle and the guy KILLED, I was in the first row and watching every note.
I don't think we'll be seeing the same from Arnel.

I saw him at the end of September and he sounded beat, still good but slipping fast. If Arnel doesn't step down his voice, do you really see him doing Journey only material consistently in top form two years from now. I don't even know if he's resting his voice now. Sounds like he's going to do some more singing in the Philippines during his downtime, just not Journey material.
