OT - Guillermo del Toro's 'The Hobbit'

When I first heard they were making two Hobbit movies, I thought "great, they'll break the book into two parts and have a very authentic and detailed adaptation." It always seemed like too much material to cram into one movie, even if it's over 3 hours long. But now I hear they are considering pulling hints, bits and pieces of lore from the appendices. I'm not liking this approach. I'd be satisfied with a 3 hour film, with a director's cut approaching 4+ hours for the DVD....

Am a huge fan, but Pans Labyrinth and Hellboy 2 especially, have me thinking Del Toro might not be up to the challenge.
Visually he def. possesses the eye.

He believes New Line shorted him 150 million dollars from the LOTR movies, that goes to the Tolkien trust charity. Now that New Line is Gone, Warner Bros. has to deal with the lawsuit. Jackson and many of the actors from the films thought New Line Screwed them over also.

Nothing about Braindead or The Frighteners suggested Jackson would be up to the challenge and that worked out well enough.

Jackson got LOTR in part to the fantasy segments in Heavenly Creatures.
More and more Del Toro seems to be repeating himself.
Hellboy 2, for all its visual flair, was really the same old tropes.
A little early for him to have the washed up has-been stink of Romero, Carpenter, Argento etc.
The Hobbit will be good cuz Jackson's team is assisting with the script.
