I spoke with Paul, the founding member of Jason's old band Escape. He's now the bassist in Eclipse. Jason is singing again and sings about "75% of the show." I gotta hear this guy sing.

The Separate Ways demo is a bit lacking after hearing the other clips. He sounds like a robot. He doesn't sound anything much like Perry there, maybe he lost a little of his range due to inactivity...?

I agree. I think Jeremey does the best job covering Perry of anyone I have heard. This guy is a VERY good vocalist, but he doesn't nail Perry. I'd love to hear him sing some Kansas though!

Whoops... they have a Kansas song on their MySpace... and yes, he does a great job!

That was NOT Jason Kelty singing Separate Ways. And as good as Jeremey is you can't possibly tell me with a straight face that he sounds better than Kelty does on those demos on page 1 of this thread.

It was hard for me to distinctly make out the vocals on those songs. LD said at the beginning of this thread that the "sound quality on these is terrible" so I listened to Stone In Love and the vocal track was hard to hear. It sounded like he was hitting the right notes in the right key, but I couldn't really hear the vocal inflections at all. I based my opinion on what I heard on their MySpace page which says that Jason Kelty is on lead vocals. Did they record those tracks before he joined the band? If so, then disregard what I said.

Someone had posted some clips of him before that were done in a studio I believe. The forum search function sucks but if you have the time you or someone else might find the thread.

Yeah, it's sort of misleading. Jason just joined the band I think, but that's not him on any of the MySpace page clips. Like I said, I've been told that he will now be singing "75% of the show." I was just floored by Dixie Highway and The Party's Over. And the "Niiiiiiiiight" vocal in DSB is just incredibly powerful. And yes, I think those clips are pre-Kelty. I'll be seeing him in a few weeks so I'll find out just how good he really is first hand.

I'd love to see him live or hear some better quality tracks. Keep us posted if you hear of any!

I wish I could find a local singer with his range. I'd love to get back in a band, but not without a good singer with a high range.

I'll be seeing him in a few short weeks and I'll ask around for a recording of the show. I don't do that shit. Wouldn't even know how.

Jason Kelty Update - 12/01/2008

Postby eclipse » Mon Dec 01, 2008 8:16 pm

OK, I guess it is time to update everyone on the "Jason Kelty situation", as it were.

Yes, Jason Kelty is now singing with us. I was the bassist in Escape from 1992 - 1994. I have been friends with Jason ever since, and, with the assistance of our guitarist, George McGrew, (former bassist/vocalist for 2112) managed to talk him out of retirement to help us with our Styx tribute show last month, and then he ended up coming on board with Eclipse as well. Since he came back, we have been rebuilding Escape who, like Colonel Steve Austin, will be better, stronger, faster.......

We now have 3 projects - Eclipse, our "70's/80s cover band", Grand Illusion, our Styx tribute, and the rebirth of Escape the Journey tribute. Jason will be doing the majority of lead vox for Eclipse, while the rest of us share lead vocal duties on a few tunes. Jason will be doing the Dennis DeYoung lead vox in G.I., while George handles the Tommy Shaw and I get to do JY. Then, of course, Jason gets to be Steve Perry again, while I handle the Greg Rollie vox. Not only is Jason a great singer, but he is a decent guitarist/keyboardist and a heck of a nice guy. Having George is key as well. We blend very well together, and our keyboardist can also sing well, so as you can imagine, our harmonies are pretty strong.

We got a few emails from some Chicago folks that are coming to town 12/12 and 13 to see a couple of our shows. We are also playing the Saturday of Christmas weekend if anyone has the chance to make it up here. These are Eclipse shows, but include a heavy dose of Journey, as well as a good amount of Styx.

We still need to redo our Eclipse MySpace demos with Jason - hopefully soon. While the vocalist that we had prior was pretty good, he was a big fan of effects to hide his pitchiness. Jason does not have that issue. In addition, we will work on getting some audio and video of some upcoming shows online before the end of the year. That way you can see that "post-millenium Jason" still has it (thanks Jeremey). I have also started on the new Escape MySpace page, and will continue to work on that as well.

Please post any additional questions and I will do my best to provide updates.

Peace, love, and rock and roll.....

Paul Soos
