I haven't been to a soundcheck, and I don't know what you're implying, but lead vocals, guitar solos, etc. are not piped in.

I tried to watch one of their sound checks backstage during the Journey/Leppard tour and they kicked me out. Haha.

The article sounds like it was written by a bunch of bitter hacks who couldn't
make it to the big leagues and like to tear down those who have. Question
though - was there any validity to the statement that Neal Schon tried to get Carlos
Santana kicked out of Santana? I've never heard of that.

When I think “danger,” I think Kenny Loggins. Or not. Ol’ Kenny, who boogied with a gopher in Caddyshack and taught rhythmless rednecks to disco with his hit “Footloose,” made “Danger Zone” the U.S. Armed Forces’ most popular recruiting song since the Village People sang “In the Navy.” Just thinking about those over-processed power chords and that whiny lead induces a jet stream of vomit. Every time we hear the kids in South Park say “They killed Kenny!” we wish they were talking about this bearded, mullethaired rocker.

That guitarist was Dann Huff, multiplatinum Nashville producer (and one of the dudes from Giant). Not that bad a solo but considering what Dann's bank account looks like these days I doubt he's sweating lists like these.

Dann Huff is a FANFUCKINGTASTIC guitarist. One of my favorites

Just another piece of bullshit these guys made up in order to try and give some credibility to their viewpoints in this so called list. Yea, Neal at 16 tried to kick Carlos out of the band bearing his own name. OK, sure.

Yeah, that's what I thought...If anything, it would've been the other way around by the time Neal left, of his own accord, with Gregg to form Journey.

I thought so too. Considering Carlos Santana didn't want Neal included when Santana was inducted into the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame and left his name off the rerelease of Santana's third record, I think it demonstrates he felt
threatened by Neal's contributions to the band's sound. I read somewhere that there is a lot of guitar work that gets
attributed to Carlos Santana that is actually Neal.

Probably just the GW author trying to twist the fact that Neal and Gregg both left to play in Journey into something it wasn't. GW has sucked for many many years, as Tomulator said earlier in the thread. It's still a funny article though.

It doesn't read as humourous at all - too pissy and not tempered by irony. George Carlin could
pull off angry humour because his observations were valid.

Humor is in the eye of the beholder in this case. Some of the shit they said, including possibly the Neal mention, may be fueled by malice, but you just can't take it too seriously.

True - people get more attention from being nasty than if they write something positive.
I'll bet none of the authors of this article are getting any backstage passes to concerts though!

I think you're taking this WAY too seriously! If it's not humor, then why did I laugh so hard I had soda coming out my nose???? The prime element that makes a thing "funny" is truth...and there's alot of truth in that article, imho!

But hey...you say "potato"...

Nah, I just think it's over the top. I know it's meant to be funny but it came across to me as merely
puerile and crass. If you found a lot of truth to it, I believe you, because I'm sure you are much more
familiar with most of those songs. Once I find BS, it calls into question for me that there is any validity to it mixed
with the "humour". (Edit: I forgot to add that I love 'Faithfully' and virtually all of Neal Schon's guitar playing,
so those critics can collectively kiss my ass! I believe that has the correct tone! )

On a sidenote, you guys are guitar players, so if someone calls a solo a "wankfest"
how would you describe that? And yes, I know what a wanker is - so I'm guessing repetitive?

I'm not much of a gutiarist but I can answer that question for you.

When a guitarist "wanks," they play a solo or whatever seemingly for their own self-indulgence. If it doesn't fit the song, or if it gets dragged out far beyond the point of any taste.... but sounds cool and technically difficult, then it's probably wanking.

Is Schon considered a "wanker?"

Nah. I'd say most really respect him for his melodic, blues-based approach that combines some more "modern" staples (i.e. fast scale runs, whammy bar tricks, liberal use of delay etc).

The, writer didn't lie when he said none would get out alive. I look at it like this; Just because there's power in the pen doesn't mean it should be used all the time and especially in a ball bustin' manner such as this article represent; I was not amused by this piece of crap. JMO!
