Unbelievable! I just found out that today was my last day of employment at a major laser manufaturing plant. The "management" pulled us (13 in all and 3 out of 4 people in my department) into a meeting and unceremoniously laid us off 5 days before Christmas.
Seriously, if this was not bad enough, the fucking timing! It couldn't wait a week so we could at least enjoy Christmas with our families!
Who the fuck is gonna bail us out??? sorry for the downer post, carry on all.

Merry Christmas, enjoy what you have, take nothing for granted.

I'm so sorry to hear this. I can't imagine what kind of company thinks
it's okay to lay people off 5 days before Christmas - it couldn't wait a
week? I hope you are well and have a good Christmas with your
family.

I am sorry. My son in law had what he considered a great job, married my daughter in Aug. and when his boss kept procratinating paying him (he still owes him $800 in back pay) he let them know that he was sorry he was having to cut back, the "economy" and all. Failed to mention that to him, that he could not pay him before he worked for weeks with no hope of being payed for his work. There is no job security or ethics in employment much any more. I was told I was going to be laid off a day before I was let go, a few years back.

Take care of you! :(

Sorry to hear this, mate.
But I think that when something happens which you think is the worst thing possible, it later turns out to have been a good thing.
Something better will turn up for you now.
Keep thinking positive. Never give up hope.
A better job will come.

Our Agent [who gets us regular weekly work throughout the year] rang us on 3rd December to say she no longer wants to represent us.
Her husband's business is now turning over millions [he breeds and races horses] and she "doesn't need the hassle of handling Acts anymore."
She sent us a Christmas card [a shitty one] with last month's commission bill in it two days later.
Then had the cheek to phone us at 5pm last night to ask if we would do a gig another Act had cancelled!
We do some Extra work on a soap opera [Emmerdale] and were still at the studio, so we were able to [politely] say 'no.'

We have gigs in the diary for this month and January and then only the odd one here and there.
We have rung another Agent and he will come and see a show in the next few weeks, so we hope he will set us on.
And we hope he will be a better one than the last one.

Positive thoughts attract positive stuff.
I keep repeating this to myself.

Happy Holidays to everyone on here especially those who have just had shit happen.

We will all get through.
We will.

They always pull this shit at the holidays. A Cooper Tire plant here in this city announced its closing 2 days ago and laying off 2100 employees. Merry Christmas. My employer announced 2 weeks ago 12000 job cuts over several states, dont know details yet. Merry Christmas again. What is it about their bottom line that makes them do this to people during holidays??? Heartless bastards. Sorry to hear that Tony, good luck man.

I'm so sorry, Tony. My company had layoffs at the end of September. I'm expecting more either the week after Christmas or right after New Year. We're waiting to hear if we got some big projects that we bid on. If we didn't, I think I'm out the door. There are only 9 people left in my department, so if other people in the department get laid off and I don't, I think the writing is on the wall.

Tony, did you get any severance pay? My first thought on the timing (not that it makes it right, just or good) is that perhaps they want to maximize the severance expense in the 2008 fiscal year for tax purposes or in an effort to take a big bath this year....since it'll be expected.

I dunno, just thinking out loud...regardless, I'm so sorry to hear the news. NOT at all what you want to hear less than a week from x-mas.

Wow Tony, sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, that's the way most companies do it. Mine just laid off... um, asked 50 people to retire, oh, and they laid off about 1700 others.
Sucks. I'm fully expecting to be unemployed by next year. I hope not. I've worked there for 25 years.

Good luck Tony. I hope you get unemployment, severence, etc. If there's something you've ALWAYS dreamed about doing, might be a good time to turn yourself in that direction.

?
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

My factory recently announced that layoffs are "imminent." 4 temps are expected to be laid off. There's only 8 at the plant.

I'm a temp who's only been there for 8 months.

I'm fucked.

I agree with you on the timing issue. Tons of companies do layoffs two weeks before the new year. It's nothing personal but the timing is important to the company for monetary reasons. I keep my walk away box under my desk. California is an at will state when it comes to employment. I figure they owe me nothing and I owe them nothing, it keeps things very simple.

shit it is the theme this year apparently, they are laying people off left and right before the holiday. They claim it is so you don't go out and spend a bunch of money you will not have!
