Woooohooooo! Looks like I get out of going to work tomorrow. :D They're calling for 3 inches of snow here in Columbia, and that's three more inches than this place can handle. They shut everything down every time we get snow. We had about 3 inches fall a few years ago, and after driving about 10 miles down the interstate I passed 27 cars in the ditch. Can't wait until I can build a snow man...I'll post pictures here (probably tomorrow). Just thought I'd share with you.

You guys can have all of our snow. It just all melted again and I know it's gonna shit on us in a matter of days right when I'm getting used to dry sidewalks and roads and not eating shit when I'm walkin around at night

. . . or ours. I'm so sick of snow this winter - still have easily 4 feet in most of my yard. We've had several major dumps this year, it's melting very very slowly and will probably not be gone until April. And - we had more last night. SherriBerry can also probably attest to what it's been like here this year.

Maybe I'm jaded, but I do NOT enjoy snow. Ok, maybe on Christmas. But I don't really like cleaning ice and snow off my car, pushing it off the ice when it's stuck, and slipping and sliding all over the roads. Winter weather makes a trip to the local drug store for toothpaste an ordeal. And yet, I'm probably gonna live in this climate my whole life. What am I thinking

Thanks for sharing that (now how did I know you'd pick out that phrase?   ) Was it 6-10 inches? - you might want to call a plumber  .

And yes, I should be used to it in Canada, but it's been a real pain in the ass this year, with me being alone most of the winter and a broken wrist to boot. Spring and melting can't come fast enough!

Yes Jim, I am excited as well. I live not too far from you in Lake Carolina in Columbia. I have been working ungodly hours lately and I am praying for a day off tomorrow because South Carolina shuts down even if it thinks it is going to snow. It is really pretty hilarious!!

It's not the AMOUNT of snow that is the problem. It's the inability to REMOVE it. There's very little (if any) budget for snow removal, so anything that falls sticks. Then, it turns to ice. At that point, you are stuck with it until it melts. Then, add to it the fact that a lot of people don't know how to drive on snow. They take their front-wheel drive (or even worse, rear-wheel drive car) and go zipping around at 5-10mph over the speed limit on roads that are slick. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what happens next. That's why everything shuts down in the south. There's simply no budget to remove it.

You guys in the north have it easy. You see wet roads when it's near freezing and you realize that there is salt on them and they are safe. In the south, if you see wet roads near freezing, that's black ice, and you better be going VERY slow if you want a prayer of not sliding into a ditch.

When we get these week+ long cold spells/snow/ice, there is LITTLE they can do to get rid of it. There's been at least a couple weeks this winter where it's been terrible out for 5+ days at a time because it was so cold you just couldn't make things better.

Exactly. We don't have it easy up north. We get this more frequently, and STILL people don't know how to drive on it/in it, so we have that many more accidents and disasters.

Depends on the location and amount of money available for it. Going up to the ski resorts in Vermont and New Hampshire in early January, we were driving at -14 and wet roads. It CAN be done if you have the $$$ and desire to do it. That's an extreme case and obviously doesn't apply to Cleveland, Pittsburgh, etc., but it CAN be done when needed. The alternative is the entire tourist trade shutting down in certain areas. If you can't reach the ski resorts, they don't make any money.

At a certain point though, if you get a multi-day storm moving through with large snow dumps, most things will come to a grinding halt. The difference is the amount of snow that must fall before things start becoming impassible--and how fast it can be cleared. The north has a clear advantage because they have a budget for snow removal.

Cleveland's pretty good about snow removal. I'm in a small PA town right now and they don't do a very good job of it here, nor do they in Erie. This year's gotten noticeably worse, but it's also one of the worst winters we've had in the last few years. Pure conjecture here, but they might be really strapped for $ right now around here and indeed can't afford to be removing snow at the pace they really need to.

It's not the budget, either. It's the fact that the only plows you folks in the south have are John Deeres, and for plowing the field and not the snow! Believe me when I tell you...if budgets were an issue, none of us would ever get rid of snow. I grew up in a VERY snowy part of the country (another 12 to 18 inches coming tonight), and most cities and towns around here have pissed through their entire season's snow "budget", after about the third storm of the winter!

Good Luck with the snow day! I'm in southeast Alabama...90 miles from the gulf and we had pretty heavy flurries today!! I guess it's been 10 years! However, it didn't stick, so back to work tomorrow...
