Riding a horse side saddle was never practical for either sex..but women wore dresses all the time...hard to sit astride in a dress..that and because it was considered unlady-like for women to sit with legs open...still is when sitting...particularly in a dress. Good thing women finally were able to start wearing pants...especially for horse back riding.
