Is Perry Sitting In The Pimp Seat?

Exactly. Even though Perry's vocal tracks undoubtedly played a pivotal role in creating the legacy, no one other than the real official band without Perry has the right to whore out the band's legacy from the Perry days. That just wouldn't be right, would it?

I think Perry is still sitting in the pimp's seat when it comes to any whoring of the legacy. When your band hires a tibute singer for you when you are still alive, that says a lot about the monetary value of the Journey/Perry legacy. Perry be pimpin. The boys are working the streets for him, and he's sitting back collecting the cash (see my avatar - LOL).

If Perry ever goes back on tour, he should wear this LED pimp coat instead of his tails:

If Journey ever gets invited into the HOF, let's petition Perry to wear that coat along with that funky fedora he wore in the Oh Sherrie video. He could come in all New Jack City and shit, yo.

Unfortunately, most of those road miles were logged running around in circles. Perhaps now, with Arnel, they can gain some traction and start moving forward again.

But don't you have to want to move forward. It would appear that Neal knows only one direction - reverse..

Maybe so, but it's about quality of miles, not quantity.
I'd rather take a porsche out for a 1 hour drive up the coast, than to drive across the country in a Ford truck.

And they've also played a lot more State Fairs now then they did with him(which was none).

Good point. But in the prime years with Augeri, that Ford truck was a King Ranch Edition with red leather upholstery.

Exactly. When Perry was with Journey, they were WAY to big to be playing the state fairs. I just remember the first time I heard Journey was playing a state fair which was with Augeri, I couldnt believe that a band as big as Journey is, had to go that route. But in a band like Journey, where the music is defined by the legendary voice of Perry, you take a huge hit when he isnt with them anymore.

I do remember though, when Perry was with Journey they did play the Mountain Aire Festival in Angels Camp, California, which was on the Caleveras County fairgrounds. Thats the only fair I can remember that Journey ever did with Perry.

True, but no matter how you dress up a truck, it's still a truck. There's nothing wrong with a truck, it get's the job done, but as Tom Cruise said in Risky Business, "Porsche........There is no substitute".

What year was that, and was it actually during the time when the state fair was going on? Some state fairgrounds are huge and can hold 30,000 people or more,

I hear ya, MadSplash. It wasn't a Porsche either with Steve Perry singing Journey songs in small venues on the FTLOSM tour without the magic of Neal and Jonathan and Steve Smith and Ross at larger venues.

Yeah I think in the 70s and 80s the Mountain Aire Festival was a premiere place to see concerts. I heard it was a very popular festival. Back in the 80s it was a huge concert draw for major music acts and I believe it holds around 20,000 people. Journey played their on August 23, 1986 and I think they played to around 20,000 or more people that day. There is not to much information about the festival, I dont even think it exists anymore.

I went there to to see SP sing Journey songs with a band that covered all of the parts wonderfully. The vocalist is the signature of any band. Him on the FTLOSM tour sounded a lot more like Journey than anything I've heard from the band since he left.

As for the small venues, he played at the AJ Palumbo center in Pittsburgh in front of almost 10,000 people after being out of the public eye for 7 years. That place is always ranked in the top ten grossing arenas of it's size. I was there and the crowd was in a frenzy the whole night.

Could Neal or John play a place like that as a solo act and sell it out? And they can try and sing all of the Journey songs they want. It wouldn't matter.

Don't get me wrong, my choice is to see Journey with SP in front, but I'd much rather see him solo than see Journey with a soundalike, copy-cat, Perry-lite, clone. I would have been more interested if they had gone forward with Soto and done something unique. He wasn't right for the back catalouge, but I would have liked to have heard what he would have created with Neal, songwriting wise.

If you're gonna try and have a direct copy, they should have hired the guy who looks more like, has the stage mannerisms and sounds more like SP, which is Jeremey H.

I don't want a direct copy, who has the stage mannerisms and sounds more like SP. There's only one Steve Perry. That's why I like Arnel. He sings in that range beautifully but isn't a clone.

Whereas, you say your choice is to see him solo rather than Journey with a soundalike, well, for 12 years nada from Perry. There was no choice. Now, if there is and he tours, there wouldn't be a choice for me. I would go see both, Perry solo and go see Journey with Arnel also, hopefully multiple times for both.

Okay obviously I do not know what Perry's contract stated when he left Jouney but how in the world does he get paid when the sing the music but at the same time AP can sing rerecords? Could have been that was never in the contract because he never imagined they would try to do that or what? Just justs seems like something a band would die if a former singer died or something or really not even at that? Can not even imagine what the thinking was there?

?

What Perry did was manage to get a court settlement that gave him a huge percentage, Herbie called it a "six way cut" as opposed to a "five way cut", of the band's profits during the Augeri years.

The Loons are lauding it as a great victory for the Beaked One; the rest of us think it's a shitty move.

What's really funny is that if Neal had done that, people would be crying and pouting and hurling threats. Double standards galore; funny to see people cast aside their sense of ethics and morality so long as someone they "like" (a term I use loosely, since none of us really know any of them) is on the receiving end of the benefits.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'
