True, but most of the people who have died were between 25-45, which is the scariest thing about this strain.

Maybe, BUT, how quickly did they seek medical care? I mean Jim Henson died years ago in his 40's from bacterial pneumonia and it was due to him not seeking medical care quickly enough. I realize that is different than viral, but you still need to seek care or you can die from any illness such as that. Even measles can kill a baby if they develop pneumonia, yet look at the people who refuse the vaccine now. When you get ANY flu, you can develop pneumonia within days, and you may need treatment or breathing treatments for the bronchials or whatever. People don't usually seek medical care that quickly. PLUS, you have no idea if these people are asthmatics. Asthma can KILL anyone with any flu if they get sick enough. I want more info before I will let them put me in any kind of panic.

Come to think of it, I should start wearing condoms to work....never know , it could happen.....

Verrry close to home here. We got an email that an older child (recently returned from vacation in Mexico) of somebody that works in our building has it. The parent (has no symptoms) has been sent home for 72 hours as a precaution. Not our company but same tower. Emails also saying anybody returning from Mexico should stay home (work from home if possible) for 72 hours.

the largest outbreak here in ny was a bunch of high school kids who had all been in mexico for spring break. i do believe that the media is running rampant with this. i got an email from a friend who works for a hospital in ny. she forwarded a message from the nyc health department and what caught my eye is that 36,000 people die from influenza each year. as someone above said, young children and older people and those with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible as well as people who do not seek immediate treatment for such serious syptoms.

i'm pretty sure we are not dealing with the subject matter of stephen king's novel "the stand". but hey....these days anything is possible.....

Well that's what scares me too. It could become a thing where they want to start quarantining people and then imagine the chaos and trust and issues that could cause. It's could end up like a witch hunt! This is scary stuff to me!! This could go really overboard really fast. I read some things in my paper this morning and I read a Mayo Clinic thing my son's high school gave out, and I am still sticking to my stance that this is over kill and over reaction.

In the paper it said there is a chance the regular flu shot MAY help, and they have NOT ruled that out yet, since it is in the Influenza A family, and that could be why we are seeing milder cases in the U.S. compared to Mexico, since they do not have availability to flu shots like we do. I am also so worried that doctor's and governments will start stock piling the anti-virals to a point where there may be someone, somewhere, who needs it prescribed but because of the PANIC they won't be able to find it in time and they could die needlessly. They are already saying pharmacies are out of it. Why are they out of it? Who is buying it??????

This panic has caused WAY more harm than it will ever cause good, that's for sure. I am willing to BET that the deaths in Mexico are directly related to their access to and their standard of health care as I said before. My daughter had a common cold once that lead to pneumonia within 3 days. I was SHOCKED that she could get pneumonia that quickly! They gave her antibiotics, even though it was viral, just in case there was bacteria involved, and she recovered on her own, just as most people with normal immune systems do. It's not the virus that kills anyone. It's the secondary infections your body develops from having the virus. That's why a drug like Tamiflu is so great because it weakens the virus so your body can fight it off quicker, before the secondary infections can develop. That potential is there with the common cold or any virus.

And this virus mutated, and it will keep mutating, and hopefully it will on it's own be lumped with all the other flus we get and people die from each year. It already is just a variation of Influenza A, a very common flu. I have a feeling next years flu shot mixture will protect this flu too. But then we have new problems like a few years ago where there will not be enough supply and the weakest of our communities, who really NEED the flu shot will not be able to get one. That will be the next drama next year! I can see it now!

Another quote from the CBC.ca forums:

"If your co-workers snort when they laugh - RUN!!!"

Seriously - it is hitting us close to home. Child at a school not far from here tested positive so they have closed the school. A lady I work with returned sick from Mexico about a month ago, took a week or so off, and returned to work before the news even broke. She's still coughing, has recently being tested but was told even if she did have it, it's too late to tell now :o . But today we found that someone else who works closely with her is now sick, and that person has elected to stay home whether it's Swine or not because she doesn't want to spread it any further. Imagine that - someone with common sense!

It's actually down to only 16 confirmed deaths. The media will hate to hear this. What will they sensationalize next?
