Andrew...big news???

Postby G.I.Jim » Tue May 19, 2009 10:15 pm

Alright Andrew, I've become a little bored lately. Just wondering if you can throw us a nugget, or even just a GLIMMER of a worthy news nugget (and no...not THOSE kind of nuggets Stevew2!). Anything coming on the near horizon that you think we might get excited about? Have you heard any clips or demos from Foreigner's upcoming album? Steve Perry's? Any bands getting back together/coming out with new material? Give us SOMETHING!!!

well...if you like Magnum, they have a new album coming out, and while it doesn't appear to be in the uber-greatness of Storyteller's Night/Vigilante/Wings of Heaven, it appears to possibly be the best since the reformation. Princess Alice was definitely moving in the right direction, and now they have gotten out of the midtempo slog they have been in for a while. Bob Catley is one of the best singers out there, and he hasn't lost much of anything over the years--and probably the only singer other than Perry to try the tux/jeans combo live. Magnum is certainly one of those love-them-or-hate-them bands, but if you "get" them, they are simply one of a kind. Hard to describe their sound though, especially since no two albums really sound remotely similar (with the exception of some of the reformation cds), but they definitely have their own sound.

That's pretty interesting! I wonder if he's just working on the mixing of the dvd though? I'm sure he's been working on that quite a bit since it was recorded. I don't think Journey's going to the studio until October, so that's my guess. I know Neal said they were going to be writing during the tour, so they probably haven't enev finished writing half of the songs yet.

Iron Maiden might have something coming in the works. Shirley has a ton of clients, not just Journey.

As far as Journey though, he's probably trying to edit out all that freaking tagalog from the DVD, I'm sure he'll leave a little bit though. TDTWT will need some heavy magic to included in the DVD, that sang just didn't come out well from what I heard on youtube. I'm sure they want to include as many Revelation songs as possible to differentiate this DVD from the last one.

They'd better keep all the songs on the DVD.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

Never been an Iron Maiden fan (other than their awesome artwork!). As long as they have "What I Needed" and "Separate Ways", I don't care what else makes the cut! I would like to hear Deen sing some tunes again though.

I love Maiden. Talk about a front man, the dude flew (as in piloted) a Jumbo Jet into Lebanon a few years ago to rescue stranded Brits when Israel was shelling the fuck out of the place.

Major balls for a pampered rock star to do something like that.

It might not be that bad if the cameras and recording equipment got cleaner shots and up close. Most of the YouTube vids were from out in the audiance, where people were pretty noisy. Or are you talking about editing out Arnel's tagalog?

well...if you like Magnum, they have a new album coming out, and while it doesn't appear to be in the uber-greatness of Storyteller's Night/Vigilante/Wings of Heaven, it appears to possibly be the best since the reformation. Hard to describe their sound though, especially since no two albums really sound remotely similar (with the exception of some of the reformation cds), but they definitely have their own sound.

http://www.magnumonline.co.uk/

Thanks for the heads up! I'll have to check them out tonight when I get home. I've heard of them, but haven't heard any of their songs. I'll let you know what I think.

It's hard to go wrong with Magnum, but basically each cd has it's own sound. Generally speaking here is an overview, and most of this can be found on youtube in one form or another. Early stuff was more progressive, then the band started getting more commercial, and success soon followed. The trio of albums in the mid 80s (Storyteller's Night, Vigilante, Wings of Heaven) is what most people consider the peak for the band, from both creative and commercial success, with each of those albums having a very distinct sound. There's a full concert from the Wings of Heaven tour in 1988 that is really good. After Wings of Heaven, the band was pulled in differing directions, never really finding a home nor much success and finally disbanded in 1995. A side project called Hard Rain (basically Magnum under a different name) put out 2 albums before Bob Catley left on account of the sound moving too far away from what he wanted to do. Meanwhile, Catley started a solo career with an album that sounded more like Magnum than the band did near the end. The reformation of Magnum was in 2002, and basically, they have been going ever since.

Early stuff (pre-On a Storyteller's Night) -- Kingdom of Madness, The Spirit, Sacred Hour, Back to Earth, Changes
Storyteller's Night -- How Far Jerusalem, Just Like an Arrow, Les Morts Dansant, On a Storyteller's Night
Vigilante -- Lonely Night, Vigilante, Need a Lot of Love, Midnight
Wings of Heaven -- Days of No Trust, Wild Swan, Start Talking Love, Pray for the Day
Later stuff (post-Wings of Heaven) -- Heartbroke & Busted, You're the One, Rocking Chair
Reformation (the latest album featured) -- Dragons are Real, You'll Never Sleep, Thank You For the Day
