As for Maine, I'll say what someone said when a friend and I went hiking there..."we have bears". 8)

Thanks for the advice, but I spent 11 years in Canada. I've seen bears in the wild.  It doesn't matter now anyway, as I've had to cancel my trip due to work. Very bummed about the whole thing! :x I have 93 leave days saved up, yet I can't use any!!!
Maine is safe now

We would have been fine with GI Jim here....too bad the trip was cancelled....maybe next time!

Glad he didnt' get ya! :P :)

New Smyrna Beach is a very nice town. I've been vacationing there every year for more than 30 years. It's too bad that the beaches took such a hit several years ago when all those hurricanes hit. They're nowhere near as nice and wide as they used to be. :(

I went to Panama Beach years ago and forgot about certain times of the day you shouldn't be out there. We were all out there at dusk and I was way out on a float with my arms and legs in the water. The next weekend a little boy was attacked in the same area and mangled badly and survived but I think is pretty much a vegetable. Tragic. It freaked me out.

I was raisied in Daytona Beach and my brothers surf and see sharks all the time. My brother got nipped once.

I've been to the Daytona/Ormond Beach area lots of times over the years and the Cocoa beach area too, and have yet to see a shark. Now I'll probably see one this year

All of my family now lives in Ormond Beach. Don't worry. I've never seen any there either. They surf farther south towards the inlet.

Yeah, I know the inlet can have a lot of them! New Smyrna seems to have bites almost every year it seems, but our friends don't have a problem, so we'll see how it goes  The attacks in the pan handle are scarier to me. I think those were Bull Sharks if I remember right, and they are creepy! Not that all sharks aren't!

Nope, no problems yet, but my luck it'll be my ass that gets it while we're all there, you just watch, lol. If so you can come back and say goodbye for me

I love New Smyrna over the other beaches near here. My FIL grew up in Ormond and he never had a shark encounter, lol. My brother however surfs a lot and has for years and years and he has seen them quite a few times in Daytona, luckily never had a run in though. And all the time we spend at New Smyrna, the shark bite capital apparently, I've still never seen one, but we see dolphins there all the time, and supposedly where there's dolphins the sharks don't hang out? lol- I'm not sure, but hopefully no encounters. There are tons of dolphins near Canaveral too, and that's not far from New Smyrna, we island camped near Canaveral a few months ago and there were tons of dolphins and manatees.

Yes, I will say your goodbye's for you  My favorite beach is Treasure Island on the gulf coast, but I'm sure I will love New Smyrna for the east coast. I love any beach anyway!!!!! Make sure the sharks are all gone for Sunday ;)

Watch out for the nude beach down there at Canaveral  My husband & I were walking there a few years ago. We were all the way at the end of the island and kept walking south on the beach when we ran into it. Before all our male readers start packing for Florida, it was all men. Sorry guys, no naked women. :( Although some of you may still be interested

If you go to Surfside in Myrtle Beach, just go out on the pier...you'll see them.  They're always there. Like someone else posted though...there hasn't been an attack since 1852. I think you'll be okay. :D I don't know what part of the country you're from, but it is hot as HELL there in July and August. Bring lots of sun screen.

We are from NY. When we were in Hawaii for our honeymoon, there were these huge stone barriers parallel to the some of Waikiki beach which blocked the huge waves of the ocean and sealife..almost like your own pool in the ocean..where people would just float around and and relax and feel safe...so people do not have to worry about anything.

Are there any types of barriers now in Myrtle Beach like the above?
