Reviews of a variety of rock albums. Checked their Journey page and lo, and behold, even Andrew gets a mention:

http://www.banophernalia.com/reviews/mu ... ourney.htm

Revelation

This is a strange release. It literally includes everything but the kitchen sink. Here in North America the package contains two discs and a concert DVD - all for $12 bucks (Canadian at Wal-Mart). I really didn't have any intention of picking this up, I mean really another Perryesque singer - this time Neal picked this one off of Youtube. I mean really - I'd had enough, Journey had turned into a charachature of itself, whoring it's once proud name to make a buck.

So what happened?

I decided to give it a chance, mainly because I was hearing some good things about the disc from people who usually have a pretty good ability to call bullshit when they hear it. Although Andrew at Melodicrock.com's review was so glowing I thought he was overdoing his meds.

Anyway I listened to the first disc a couple of times, and was pretty impressed. The new guy had that Perry tone, but the songs were being sung by him and were his to interpret his way. Based solely on the music, I'd stack this up with anything the band had done before. Alhough why the guys felt they had to put in "Faith in the Heartland" is a bit of a mystery - it's a good tune, and was one of the highlights Generations.

What cemented the deal for me was the live DVD. In fact if you're kind of on the fence over whether or not Arnel Pineda can actually pull off the gig, watch the concert first. Yeah, he's a bit wild eyed at times, but my goodness he can sing, and the blending of the old and new material works really well.

The disc of covers is a bit of a brain twister overall - Journey covering Journey? The band practically recreates note for note eleven of their past hits with Arnel front and centre - and he pulls it off. If you're firmly in the Perry camp, this this is insult to injury.

For all that though I have to say, if you're a fan of Journey, then this is something you do need to get your hands on. It will indeed be revelation (oh come on, how could I resist). Overall I'd put Revelation ahead of the "reunion" album back in 1996. This is classic Journey, and Neal is a good as ever (better in many respects). In fact the whole band has found another gear - the only downside is that it isn't 1986 anymore.

I love most of Revelation....and this might sound nutty, but there are two remakes that I actually like better than the originals. They are Who's Crying Now and Seperate Ways. Arnel really does them justice. Normally I am quite opposed to remakes, but this time they worked for me. :D

Not nutty at all, I prefer OTY and AWYWI over the originals. 8)

OtY and OA for me. "Who's Cryin' Now" was okay; but I'm not partial to the Perry version either. The best part of that song is Neal's solo and they started to fade it out way too early in the rerecorded version.

"Separate Ways" is inferior until the chorus comes along and then it starts to shine as well as the original. Neal's guitars were just a little too prominent; half of the song's beauty comes from the keyboards.
'Nothing was bigger for Journey than 1981’s “Escape” album. “I have to attribute that to Jonathan coming in and joining the writing team,” Steve Perry (Feb 2012).'

Beyohd "Revelation" check out some of his other reviews. Looks like this is his personal music collection and there's quite a variety.

I saw reviews for Shadow King, Dream Theater, Genesis and artists I've never heard of.

pineda has been known to adding an extra syllable here and there as in ... "wheel in the sky... ah!"

maybe its just letting out some air or just a habit

The "c'mon!" is what he kept saying to the crowd at his first concert in Chile, not sure if he still does it.

Makes you wonder if maybe Journey is trying to get out of the exclusive Walmart deal since Walmart is carrying everything but Revelation. Seems weird that they are out on the Revelation tour and still have songs in the top 20 to not have the album out there anywhere.

Jeremey told us that Revelation only sold 300 copies the first quarter of the year (which I guess he knows from his royalty payments). Considering Wal-Mart only has room to carry 5k titles compared to major record stores who hold up to 60,000 different titles, which album are you going to carry, the GH package that is an evergreen title at 15X Platinum, or Revelation which has topped out at 750,000 units sold, a year out? AC/DC and The Eagles moved moved more units than that in only two months and their albums are barely kept in stock also.
Wal-Mart isn't stupid, they probably promised to stock a certain amount of units (1 million?) and after that they are off the hook. If the store has long term digital rights though, then Journey is fucked as far as moving the album over to itunes or AmazonMusic. We'll have to see how that plays out.
Journey was paid well, they are no longer needed by Wal-Mart. If their next album doesn't have Don't Stop Believin' printed somewhere on the CD jacket, then chances are, Wal-Mart won't be asking them back.

Foreigner is getting set to work on a three disc package (one new disc, on retread disc and one live DVD). Maybe they're Wal-Mart's next exclusive.
