Fun OT: Meaning Of Your Last Name...Say What?

Postby Shadowsong » Sun Jun 21, 2009 2:51 pm

http://www.last-names.net/

Hey, looked up the meaning of my last name

nickname for a tall man, from Middle High German ‘giant’, ‘monster’, ‘bogeyman’, from Middle High German ‘Hun’, a word probably ultimately of Turkic origin.
from an old personal name derived from the Germanic element hun ‘bear cub’.
metonymic occupational name for a poultry keeper, from Middle High German huon ‘hen’.

Giant family of turkey farmers...

NOT!!!!

"Belonging to St Dewi (David)" - er, no. Not this happy little atheist. ;)
Why treat life as a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving in an attractive & well-preserved body? Get there by skidding in sideways, a glass of wine in one hand, chocolate in the other, body totally worn out, screaming WOOHOO! What a ride!

I was checking names & thought about my cousin Mike Martello who teaches martial arts in Belgium so I looked him up on you tube to find he died on June 2 at the age of 42.
I am in shock & tears. We weren't really close as the last time I saw him we were children but I had been watching his vids & we shared a few emails this year.

It's so sad but true Martello means hammer & he hit like a hammer...

It was his heart...our family curse.

& thru the great internet all things must pass.... Least I can be there in spirit as his ashes are to be scattered tomorrow from the Whitestone Bridge in Queens, NY.

That's rough....hugs to you from all of us here.... I hope you can find a bit of solace in that...and from the warmth of love you carry for and from your brother in your heart.

Bethune Name Meaning and History

French (Béthune) and Scottish (of Norman origin): habitational name from Béthune in Pas-de-Calais, Picardy, France, recorded in the 8th century in the Latin form Bitunia, probably an adjective (with villa understood) derived from the oblique form of a Germanic personal name Betto, a hypocoristic formation. Compare Bettencourt, Beaton.

My Maiden Name History:

Dalby Name Meaning and History:

Norwegian, Danish, and northern English: habitational name from any of various places named Dalby, named with Old Norse dalr ‘valley’ + býr ‘farm’, ‘settlement’. The English surname is common in Yorkshire, where it derives mainly from Dalby in North Yorkshire, but similarly named places in Leicestershire and Lincolnshire are also possible sources. In Norway, it is common as a farm name.

I guess that's true....people in my Family worked on the Land.....I'm into Gardening & love it. 8)

NOTHING came up for my Married Name: Tragianese.

Soto Name Meaning and History
habitational name from any of numerous places named Soto or El Soto, from soto ‘grove’, ‘small wood’ (Latin saltus).
Castilianized spelling of Asturian-Leonese Sotu, a habitational name from a town so named in Asturies.
Castilianized spelling of the Galician equivalent, Souto

I think small wood is too literal it probably is more like small forest hence grove
