Seriously, Journey is not U2 or Bon Jovi. Those bands have at least had some Top 40 hits this decade. Living off of the coat tails of DSB can only take you so far.

They played Live Nation's amphitheaters by themselves in 2005 with far less public notoriety. Journey has done everything right in the last year and a half. What lies ahead in 2010 could be very interesting.

Just get out that Manila DVD. That's what I am so looking forward to. 8)

Get it out where, exclusively through their website? Best Buy? Target? That's an important question.

Another question, also, is, since it's not attached to an album and it sounds like they're releasing it alone, will it be a two-hour DVD of the whole show and not a one-hour like Revelation?

2005 was just about the right time for them. The economy was decent, Melodic Rock was starting to make a comeback, the timing was right. I think the zenith was 2008 though and I see the I Love The 80s wave starting to slowly grind down these next few years.

I might argue that 2008 and 2009 are equally as successful, which is the absolute perfect, ideal build-up for 2010 since they played to fans in two different groups of market sizes - the major tour stops in 2008 and the secondary markets in 2009. And they enjoyed similar, if not equal success each year. The way they routed the two legs of the Revelation Tour and how each leg complements the other and covers different spots of the country is great planning and foresight.

I would hope it's the complete show. I would be extremely disappointed if they cut this DVD down. Even the 2001 Arrival DVD was not the full show. I want a full-length concert. The setlist from Manila looked phenomenal.

And do they apply some serious editing to TDTWT or just cut it altogether? Deen's backing vocal is overpowering on that song.

When they are booked into Live Nation's amphitheaters for an entire summer tour with no opening act, then a better example can be drawn. By mixing amphitheaters, state fairs, arenas and casinos this year, it hasn't given us a real judge of Journey's drawing power. Not to mention either Heart or Night Ranger was in tow at 95% of these shows.

Book an entire tour at Live Nation's amphitheaters - like the 2008 leg of the Revelation Tour - but with no opening acts, then you can have a better idea of what kind of confidence promoters have in Journey circa 2010.

From this interview it sounds like they will be touring with at least one other band, but who knows?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NkT3Boxd49I

Pretty funny about Arnel Panera. Also, wasn't it a chick on "The River" who first played After All These Years?

You're right, they'll probably go out with another act. And I'm in full support of that. There's nothing wrong with them bringing along another act, as long as they're the headliner. I was just cautioning people from getting too fired up and saying that Journey is filling big venues again. You can't say that until they play those venues by themselves, since what attracts people might be the entire package and the full night of music, and not the strength of Journey's name draw.

But if they bring someone along in 2010, that's perfectly fine with me. They don't need to prove anything based on the size of venues they're playing. People just have to be careful of assuming too much about Journey's nationwide popularity based on venues that they play with another act on the bill.

Look at it from a promoter's standpoint:

You hear that Journey is looking for venues for a summer tour by themselves. As a promoter, do you go ahead and book them into the 23,000 seat Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Indianapolis hoping that the name Journey will sell enough tickets, merchandise and concessions to make money for your venue after paying the band's guarantee?

Or you hear that Journey is looking for venues for a summer tour with Cheap Trick and Heart in tow. Does the strength of each band on its own, plus the overall value of the package make you rush to book Journey, Heart and Cheap Trick into the same 23,000 seat amphitheater, knowing that making money won't be an issue for you?

I'm going with the latter. Although neither one really says anything about the quality of the bands who are playing. It's just the overall value to the promoter that determines where the band is booked.

From what I read the Revelation DVD could have had more songs on it, but in Neals words, "we fucked up". They had to redo part of it and some songs were omitted.

And my guess is the Manila DVD will not have TDTWT. There is no way to fix that song, as it sounded there. :(

You can fix anything. The Revelation DVD was a huge disappointment, I hate how it's spliced together. It doesn't feel like I'm watching a show at all.

That's why I really enjoy the Pro-Shot Japanese boots from the Escape and Departure tours. No editing or studio magic.

I don't mind a little touching up here and there. If the backing vocals sucked at the concert, fix 'em a bit, I don't care. I do want to watch the entire show though, none of this skipping around and truncation bullshit.

Night Ranger Rocks. Journey ups their game when NR is opening. The sappy stuff has to remain at a minimum or Jack and the boys will be laughing at them.

This setlist is two songs away from being a great one.

Faithfully is the only ballad you need, Neal. Dump that other shit.

Look at the tunes they request. Instead of grabbing a sixpack and finding love in the back of a Chevrolet, they want to listen your heart beating next to mine and sailing off together.

maybe, but the extended LTS as an encore loses 95% of the audience--or at least it did the last time I saw them. The extra ballad with Patiently/WCTNGOF can't be any worse. Anyway, it's not like Night Ranger has a singer that can compete with Arnel.... They would be better off moving LTS towards the end of the main set and ending with Faithfully (preferably the extended version).

They should go back to having the extended WITS finishing the regular set and LTS/AWYWI for the encore.

OR

AWYWI/Separate Ways as the encore.

Seen the first YT video out of Baltimore WITS ...Arnel seems to be having problem or maybe tired?

I don't know if it is the video quality or from that vantage point but definitely something wrong out there.
Only his ability to improvise saves the song from disaster.

I'll wait from some more YT clips to confirm..

Just my opinion..

its funny the conversations,
journey has done i mid size ampitheatre tour with no opening act,
i believe every show ive ever seen them do had an opening act except generations.
styx and springsteen in thier heydays were among a few to not have opening acts.
night ranger are a perfect opemer, a little more rocking to bring in a slightly different crowd.
and journey/azoff were brilliant by booking them in fairs/smaller b/c market venues were the bigger acts of the day wont play.

FLEETWOOD MAC
