"I Believe"....

Postby G.I.Jim » Sun Sep 20, 2009 9:08 am

Hey everyone,

I hope you're all having a great Saturday night! You're probably out having fun somewhere instead of sitting at your computers, but I figured I post our newest song "I Believe" on our myspace page tonight. You can hear it at www.myspace.com/jimrykbost

I posted a couple of shorter clips on this song earlier, but this is a much longer clip with vocals. I hope you like it!!! :D It's still a rough version, and is the first take. The guitars and vocals need to be re-recorded AND remixed, but this will give you an idea of what the song will sound like!

I like the vibe, but I was totally swept away by Melinda. Great writing there Jim, great arrangements too. Your singer's voice reminds me of a softer version of my late friend Kevin Gilbert. Oh how I miss that. Best of luck, E

Thanks Eric, I really appreciate that! I'm sorry to hear about your friend. Did he ever release anything? I'd love to hear his stuff. I'm glad you liked the songs. It's funny you mentioned Melinda, because I think it's our strongest song so far. I'm also very proud of "Losing You", even though the influences of the song slap you in the face!

I think once the drums are recorded (we're shooting for next month), Alex may fly here so we can mix the entire album together. I guess we'll just have to see what are schedules AND finances are like, but that's the plan.

Thanks Rick... too bad I can't taste it! ( uh... that didn't come out right! ). We'll definitely be taking our time with the final tracks. We've worked too hard and long on this to mess it up with a hurried production!

Nope...trying to behave myself tonight! I'm actually rehersing 5 songs for church tomorrow. Tomorrow will mark the first time I've played in a church in 2 1/2 years! I hope my hair doesn't catch on fire when I walk in there!!  JUST joking.

I have done some soul searching here in the last few weeks, and it's amazing how the church approached me right now... I had already made it up in my mind to go to church that next weekend... my phone rings the NEXT day, and it's the church band calling me and asking me to come back. I had been gone for 2 1/2 years, and you can't tell me that's just a coinsidence!

God works in amazing ways sometimes! :D I took that as my sign to GET MY BUTT BACK IN CHURCH... so here I am tonight. :D

BTW... Thanks for the compliments on Melinda! I posted about it when I updated it, but I think people are tired of all of my updates, and they just skip them! I don't blame you though... I have been beating a dead horse here... 8)

Sounds really good Jim... one question and one question/suggestion depending on how you answer the question aspect

1. Who is going to play bass on the finished product?

2. Are you going to keep that vocal delay you've got on every song? I think you told me before your singer Alex throws that effect on every time he cuts a vocal for you. It sounds really neat on some songs, but when it's on every song it's a bit distracting and also kinda homogenizes the vocals song to song. I assume that's gonna be reeled in a bit for the final product?

I think my favorite so far is "Where Would I Be." Great instrumentation and good melody throughout. I feel like the chorus vocals need a bit more urgency or oomph somehow and you would have a song that woulda been huge in the 80s. I'm not sure if it's the melody or the delivery... but I feel like it can be made even better with a little tweaking. Maybe a big harmony is in order or something.

Hey Matt, two answers...

1. Tentatively Paul Logue from Edens curse, but we're not possible. He has said he would do it, but our songs may be a little too light for him. I don't want to push him out of his element, and I want this album to flow as smooth as possible. We do have some other options... but I'll just leave it at that for now.

2. No, we will definitely change up vocal effects on the final recordings. These are all just placeholders. That goes for everything... keys, guitars, etc... We have only recorded basic tracks to move the songs along, but once we do the "real" recording, EVERYTHING will be redone to perfection! a lot of the keyboard sounds you hear will change, and I'll be adding a lot more stuff in there to build up the dynamics of the songs. I can't even imagine how many tracks we're going to use! This might be interesting trying to mix all of this.

Thanks again, and we are going to change this one quite a bit also. These songs have just Alex and I on vocals, but the final tracks will probably have 5 vocalists. I believe in HUGE harmonies, and I'm going to implement them in most of the songs. I may even have a female vocalist work on a few. I've worked with her in the past and she's AMAZING!!! She sings in our church band.

I feel like the chorus vocals need a bit more urgency or oomph somehow and you would have a song that woulda been huge in the 80s. I'm not sure if it's the melody or the delivery... but I feel like it can be made even better with a little tweaking. Maybe a big harmony is in order or something.

Great... 15 track those fuckin vocal tracks!

That's a lot of vocals.

Not really... Perry probably used over 30 on some of their songs! I think I remember reading a quote from Neal about that. When you have that many, you just have to do a good job mixing them, and they can be very powerful. I did a couple of songs with about that many vocals on them for the country album I played on years ago. It sounded awesome! :D

Hi Jim,

Keep posting the clips. I love listening to how things evolve. I think "I Believe" is Alex's best vocal so far.

Re the mention of Kevin Gilbert check out Toy Matinee.

Hey Duncan,

I'm flattered..I love Toy Matinee and Kevin Gilbert as well... I have no words...especially 'cause the take of "I believe" I've done it was just a rough take. I was infact suffering (ans I still do) a massive pain at my arm and I was unable to do anything but to fill myself with painkillers and rest in bed :-( dammmn it!

Thanks Again
Hope you did enjoy all the rest too Duncan :-)

Bye

Great songs Jim. Melinda sounds really good, great vocals and backups (and keys of course). I could have laid a drum track down for ya but I guess we'll wait for the italian dude. I'm sure he kicks.

Keep it up man!

Not to derail my own thread, but Kevin was AWESOME!!! Check this song out... very melodic and dark. He was a great artist. :( Sad I had never heard of him before.

That's either a repetitive strain injury from excessive wanking or you're about to have a heart attack.

Duncan... I'm gonna go with the "EXCESSIVE WANKING" theory. :D I think Alex likes to have tug-of-war contests with himself just to see who would win!   The funny thing is... he always LOSES!!! 8)
