Paranormal Activity

Postby YoungJRNY » Fri Oct 23, 2009 11:06 pm

Okay all you "horror" buffs out there. Are you one of those people who go around and claim that you never get scared or that a scary movie will never get a jump out of you? Look no further. Paranormal Activity is a movie that is hitting this nation by STORM. This movie is a low budget film and only took about 11,000 dollars to make. It is the same category of the Blair Witch Project, a movie set up in realistic standards and reality. This movie was only selected to be in a select few states, but since a petition was started across the world, their might be a showing near you, and finally there is a showing near me, I'm going tonight.

They are saying this is the most chilling, and horrifying movie of it's time. No blood, no guts, just straight, brute terror. I've heard this on the radio many times and people say they couldn't sleep for days after watching this, it is THAT scary. It is about a couple who video tape their paranormal activity inside their household, and things escalate from there. I am really looking forward to this, and want to get the complete piss scared out of me. I believe in the Paranormal, so things like this give me the creeps and I admit I'll prob be a little on the scared side during this. I'll post my review tonight.

So, anyone interested, I urge to go see this if you want the complete hell scared out of you and if you enjoy TRUE scary movies.

I'll be very interested to hear what you think of it. I really want to see it, as I'm into that stuff, but really, I thought Blair Witch Project sucked and it scared me about as much as Sponge Bob.

I kind of wanted to see this after I saw the trailer.

I'm still having Blair Witch (a.k.a. "WTF? Gimme My Damn Money Back") flashbacks though so movies like this worry me.

The Blair Witch wasn't that great IMO and you could barely tell what was going on half of the time. The only comparison that's made to the BWP is that it's low budget and it has the same feel as far as reality is concerned. It's by no means a documentary, just a movie, but the movie is shot kind of like a documentary on someones video camera. I'll post tonight, but judging from the things people and my buddies said after experiencing this, they were truly terrified.

My friend saw it the other day as well, and he said he literally slept less than an hour for two straight nights after he saw it. He could not get it out of his mind. I have no desire to see this movie.

You know, if men are having problems with this movie, I am thinking I should refrain  I couldn't go back to my apartment alone EVER after I saw Silence of the Lambs when it was in theaters. I'm thinking this movie would be a mistake

My mom drug me to see that when it was in theaters. And yes, I was 6. And no, I've never watched it again.

I saw this last weekend. It definitely had several "chilling" moments. My kids had seen it the night before and were absolutely freaked out. They would not sleep in their rooms. These are teenagers, mind you.

6!! I couldn't handle that movie and I was 22   I didn't even know what it was about at all! I went because I heard it was good. Not good for a single girl living alone in an apartment for sure  It was a GOOD movie though, great acting. I was just too much of a chicken!

I saw it with my son Brian.

Other than two scenes, it bored me. Not scary at all. Not even a little. I've seen scarier stuff on Ghost Hunters. The ending was lame, they could have, and should have done so much more. The hype on this movie got me too, I wanted to see "the scariest movie in a decade".

Yulog, I beg to differ. If It was all hype, then this movie would be playing world wide. If anything, it's not the hype but judging from customer reviews, there are more and more cinema's playing PA on the big screen across the world that never held it in the first place. It's being said that petitions are being signed everywhere by movie goers and more and more cinema's should be added to the list if this keeps delivering, and it's delivering in a HUGE way when being judged by how many theater's carried it in the first place. The jury is still out since it's all personal preference, but I'll take these kinds of horror flicks over "Chucky" or any slasher movie known to man.

I was let down more times than one by going and burning money on today's "scary" movies and vowed I'd never waste a single dime on another. But reviews are huge, and this is the movie where I'll give it one more chance.

Yulog's right.
It sucked.
One heckler in the audience, who initially grated on my nerves, summed up the feelings of the audience toward the end: "THAT FUCKING SUCKED!"
My friend fell asleep.
When the lights went up, the whole audience slowly lumbered out of the theatre single-file in a state of underwhelmed shock.
Given the hype, I knew to calibrate my expectations accordingly, but for me, this film barely worked on a student film level.
I gave 'Blair Witch' props when it came out, but this was just dull.
If your idea of blood freezing, bone chilling horror is watching a door swing open by itself, go part with your ten dollars.

As for the petitions being signed, I viewed that as a marketing ploy right from the start. It gave the film the appearance of some sort of grassroots movement sweeping the nation.
But c'mon, we're dealing with Paramount here, the big guns, they were probably gonna do a national rollout regardless.

Well said.
Apparently the ending was one of many that were filmed.
Spielberg, who saw the film and convinced Paramount to release it, gave the director the idea for the ending currently playing in theatres.
I looked up the alternative endings....the movie still would've sucked.

There are reviews out there that state the same thing from what's little that's out there who didn't like it and I'm glad I read up on everything before hand. I am a firm believer of the super natural and believe in the paranormal for many reasons, so that is why it's touchy to where I think I'll get creeped the hell out. I won't believe the hype, and will go in there with a open mind and lower expectations, so I hope it delivers for me. I'll post a review later tonight. If anyone else sees it, let me know what you thought!

The problem is that Hollywood has no agenda other than getting the most people in theatre seats as possible. And I guess that's why they are in business, BUT....they can't do it with movies that have more substance? And if you answer 'no', that is saying alot about the state of humanity. I'd much rather shell out 10 samolians for a movie like Shawshank Redemption, or Amelie....than to continually be bombarded with movie after horrid movie about half naked teenagers having car trouble then wandering into a backwoods hillbilly shack of backwards dumbfucks bent on carnal violence....

and this practice of remaking every fucking movie and 70s TV shows HAS to stop.

I'll await you thoughts.
It's easy to be a knee-jerk hater when something is massively hyped.
That's not the case here tho, the movie, taken on its own merits, did not deliver.
The rave reviews have me seriously questioning whether some of these critics are on the take.
Then again, "Drag Me to Hell" was also lauded as a horror masterpiece and I thought it was real weak, and I'm a huge Raimi fan.

My browser somehow wound up on one of the torrent sites, and they have a DVD screener there that people are downloading like crazy. The nerve. From what I read there, it has a different ending than the theater version.

Watched the PB version at home with the stereo cranked. I let my son and his friends be the critics.
I concurred with their final analysis.
The movie sucked.

All these guys are trying to catch the original Blair Witch Excitement. After you get past the hype, you see these movies as they really are, low budget mediocre films. 99% of the time, originality trumps imitation.

IMO, The last great low budget horror/suspense film was 28 DAYS LATER.

Yeah, I don't pay MUCH attention to reviews via written articles because of this reason. I usually resort to Youtube and watch people talk about it right after coming out of the cinema's and their reactions are priceless. You can see the terror on their face and hear it in their voice. 90% of the time people's reaction's like this are good enough for me to get my ass in a seat. I'm obviously excited about this because it's been awhile such a low budget film was this talked about, but I'd feel shitty to feel disappointment and be a sucker yet again.

This guy here had me crackin up.

For me, I think the last 'horror' that I actually liked was Cabin Fever. I'm not saying it was a great movie. But I liked it. Eli Roth makes decent films.

Eli Roth on hype:

"Hype can be the best thing in the world, but too much of it can kill you. There's this weird balance between getting people excited to see the film, and not wanting to over-hype it to the point where they can't enjoy it because they've been told it's so great. Cabin Fever was definitely a victim of that, and people got really angry if it didn't live up to their expectations that they read on the Internet. The truth is, with movies like Hostel and Cabin Fever, the Internet's our only shot. They don't have the big stars like War of the Worlds, and they don't have the advertising dollars that these films do. Studios can spend $30-$40 million marketing a movie. How do you compete with that? You have to find a way to get fans to support your movie, and the Internet's the only way to reach them directly without a huge budget. However, the danger is that if you catch that hype wave and people are excited, you have crazy expectations to live up to. People's enjoyment of a movie is directly related to what their expectations of that movie are. If they heard Cabin Fever was some weirdo low budget scary/funny indie movie that got a distribution deal at a festival, they tended to like it much more than people who heard it was the second coming."
