"Signs of Life" from Arrival

Postby FishinMagician » Sun Nov 08, 2009 1:27 pm

Has anyone noticed the solo? Neal just plays Who's Cryin now in one part of it. I think he is tryin' to pull one over on us ... lol

Lots of Journey songs are interchangeable with each other. :D

I noticed that at work one day. I was playing a rock playlist really low, with WMP minimized. I thought for a second I heard WCN but when I moused over the player, I saw it wasn't. Obviously, NWA isn't the first time they've recycled a melody or two.

If He Should Break Your Heart has the Send Her My Love sound... (but not nearly as much as Bryan Adams's "Run To You" )... Raised on Radio has a guitar bit from You Should Be Happy (from Street Talk, of course). And we all know that "When You're Alone" comes right from "My My My".

I took it completely different -- as a sample (in the rap tradition), a tip of the hat. The Police sample Every Little Thing in a couple of their other songs, even using the lyric "a big enough umbrella" I thought it was cool, fits the theme of To Be Alive Again to ask Who's Cryin Now ...

This was quite a topic back when that song came out. I think there were even a few interviews where Neal admitted to do doing some 'meds' that night and decided to put a little Escape on Arrival (para'd). I think the intent of Arrival as a comeback album was to channel a little bit of classic Journey. Problem for me was that it was over-worked and too long. I mean, more Journey is always better, right? But with this album I was wondering when it's gonna be over.

Arrival had too many songs, but the biggest problem was that there were too many ballads. If they had dropped a few of them and left all of the rockers in, it would have been much better. Had this album been promoted better, it could have been a big seller. There are some great songs that just didn't get heard and I think people would have liked them.

Every time "When You Love a Woman" starts, my wife is certain that it's "With Your Love" from Arrival. As someone else pointed out, this isn't so unusual for Journey. Remember...they're trying to hold onto their "legacy sound". What better way to do that than to just play the songs that put you on the map!

Yep he admitted it was an homage and trick to see if we could pick up on it kinda....the WCN, SOL riff is in the ending solo if If He Should Break Your Heart as well.

Nothing wrong with a little recycling. I also noticed the outro to "Ask the Lonely" bares a striking resemblance to the intro to DSB...not that there's anything wrong with that.

Yep. A lot of guitar players do this with some of their famous licks/motifs, Neal is not the first or the last.

Yes, that main descending part of the solo. I also caught the same lick in one of the Generations songs. Anyone know which one?
