Yup. HUGE Beatle fan here. I always remember this day.
I was Christmas shopping and they were playing all this Beatles music and John Lennon stuff over the store system. I'm thinking "Cool! Finally, no Andy Williams, Perry Como Christmas junk..." about 10 minutes in, they announced that he'd be killed. I was holding "Double Fantasy" in my hand, I was buying it for a friend. It sucked. Went home and was glued to my TV for hours.

Since it's Christmas: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqM-VcwMLDw
Happy Times.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Saint John, what was it you labeled Lennon as?

I will admit, Twist And Shout MAY be the single greatest, best lead vocal of all time.

Absolutely!!!!

Just saw some documentary this week-end. Paul said that they saved "Twist and Shout" for last in the recording sesstion because they knew it would trash John's voice.

He is missed.

I was only 12 so I don't have a huge memory of the moment I heard it or what I felt. But my biggest memory was the next day we had reading, the teacher was practically in tears and played his music the whole period telling us things about him. I don't think most of us got it. She seemed so old to us and she was probably 30. I just remember thinking it was sad anyone could get gunned down that way for no good reason:(

Rude? No, it sounded pretty complimentary actually.

But I think I'm rude too. I thought you were younger also... like closer to my age.

Double Fantasy would've been a great record.... except that it was split with Yoko. That should've never happened.

I woke up to hear the news on the radio...always slept with the radio on back then. I called in sick 'cause I couldn't face the world after hearing the news. John and George were my favorite Beatles...both gone now.

A solitary weirdo. I didn't have much of a reaction then and I'm still indifferent to this day. I don't condone his murder one bit, but he was really nothing more than a drug addict who had been manipulated by a skanky pig. A shame, too.

it was definitely meant as a compliment!

another musician that was taken from us on this date was dimebag darrell. i had spent some time around him while on the road with pantera & white zombie in 1996. he was one of the most generous & joyful people that i had ever met.

Funny thing about Twist and Shout- That album, "Please Please Me", was recorded in ONE 12-hour session. ONE DAY to make an album. Holy Crap. It takes bands freakin' years now.

"Twist and Shout" is a great vocal. Paul's "Oh! Darling" is also an amazing one that is super hard to pull off.

And definitely- Thanks to all of you that didn't mention the bastard's name.

I think Rick Springfield actually put the whole thing great. This song rules (lame video though):
