I'm Twitter illiterate. Does anyone know how Twitter works?

Postby JasonD » Sun Dec 27, 2009 5:46 am

How do I post a comment to someone’s Twitter page? I’ve tried searching the Twitter Help section, but all it does is talk over my head with a lot of wordy mumbo-jumbo. I’m lost on what should be a simple explanation. All I want to know is how to post a comment on someone else’s Twitter page. Does anyone here know how to do that? So far all I've been able to figure out is how to post on my own Twitter page, but what's the fun in that? That's kind of like having a conversation with yourself:

"Hi, Jason, how are you?"

"Who me? Oh, I'm just fine & how about yourself? You doing okay, Jason?"

"Just peachy. Thanks for asking, Jason. How was your Christmas?"

"Couldn't have been better." .... tweet, tweet.

There's got to be something more to Twitter than having a conversation with myself. :P Is anybody here a Twitter expert? If so, please help. Thanks.

Say you want to Tweet me (tylerwoodbridge)

you'd have to send it to my attention by placing the term "@tylerwoodbridge" right before you write your message.

Hence:

"Hey dude! How the hell are ya?!"

if sent to me, would be written as:

"@tylerwoodbridge Hey dude! How the hell are ya?!"

hope that helped.

Just my .2cents. I think Twitter is retarded and a waste of time unless you follow such people as celebrities who tweet weird shit. But as far as friends, Facebook is the way to go.

I agree it's much more user friendly....but my kids coaches use Twitter to update schedules....so I am forced to use both

You do all the posting from your own page. to direct it TO someone, (it's called "at reply") you do the "@" sign with their user name, like Prog said. So, like mine would be "@bluejeankim" ... It will still show up on your page, but the person you are "at replying" will see it on their page also. However, other people who look at their page can't see what you're saying. They can only see things written by the person whose page it is.

It's a little confusing at first. I didn't really 'get it' either right off the bat.

I agree. I was following Howie Mandel for a short time, and I just dumped him yesterday. He's a lot funnier verbally, and he tweets ALOT. He was flooding the hell out of my page. So, buh-bye! I've dumped several people for that reason.

I'm gonna try it. Pay no attention to all the crap you'll see on my page.

So let me get this straight. I just posted something to you & yes, it showed up on my page that I posted it. Now, if I log off & go to your page I won't see my message, but you still will? Is that what you're saying?

That's what I gotta do as well. I "follow" one simple person or entity & the next thing you know I'm getting tweets up the ying-yang over every little thing. I gotta go through & dump some "friends" or whatever the proper term is. Basically, I look for Verified Accounts & that's who I choose to follow. Otherwise you don't know who's the real so-&-so versus who's got a so-&-so fetish & wants to pretend they're someone famous.

BJG, Prog... did either of you get my message?

This is what I am saying, yes. The only place that your writings appear (whether they are a general tweet or an "at reply" to someone else) is on your own page. But if you send an "at reply" to someone, they will see it because the "@" ensures that it is directed to the user you are addressing.

So if I send a message, for example, to @JasonD - I will see it on my own page, because *I* sent it. I will not see it on your page. the only other people that will see it is followers of BOTH of us. So if Prog follows both you and I, he will see us communicating. The only thing that will then appear on your page is if you reply/send a message back to me.

Make sense?

No. Did you "protect" your account? That might be why.
Or it might be because mine is private. Not sure. I'll un-priavte it and see if I see anything.

Send me something, please so I can see this for myself. Not @JasonD. ... @PeaceMyBrother.
Yes, I know it's stupid. I didn't pick it but it leads me to my NEXT question: How do I change that to say JasonD?

Easy. I've changed mine... as long as it's available it's easy to do... Under "settings" on the top menu... the 2nd option down "username" - just put in the name you want and it will tell you if it's available or not. If it is, you're good to go, if not... try another.

Also, I sent you a test. Click "reply" under the tweet and it will auto-fill the "@" thing into your message bar and you can reply to the person. Must be under 140 characters.

Something is still not right. ProgRocker53 & bluejeangirl76: I did not get either of your messages. Prog, I know that you sent one b/c I can see it when I toggle over to your page, but I can't see it on mine. Do I have to "follow" you guys in order to receive messages from you? I haven't added either of you to my "follow" list yet.

if you're on twitter.com, click on the link in the right column that says @JasonDeConcini. that's where you'll see the @ replies sent to you from others. anyone can see @ replies if they search @JasonDeConcini. direct messages are private & not searchable. i'm sending one of each to you now.

Thanks Cyndy. I got them both. Here's what's weird: Your @reply showed up on my Main Board...I don't know the proper term for the "Main Board", but when I say that I'm referring to the part that shows up when you click on "Home." Your @reply ALSO showed up under my @JasonDeConcini in the sidebar. ProgRocker53's tweet showed up under my @JasonDeConcini in the sidebar ONLY.... not on the Main Board. BJG's tweet never showed up at all. I never received what she sent & so I'm thinking she may have sent it to @JasonD which isn't me. That name was taken when I signed up so I had to go with something else.

Thanks for the info & for helping me out. Thanks ProgRocker53 & BJG as well. I'll have to play with this awhile. Thanks again everyone. :D

my @reply to you also showed up on your home/profile page because you are following me. you are not following ProgRocker53, so his @reply to you showed up only in @JasonDeConcini. BJG's tweet must have taken a detour into the bermuda triangle.

I won't post pictures of my daughter online b/c you never know who might be out there lifting them. I'm very protective of my daughter. She loves Dora The Explorer & so I post that pic instead. It makes me think of my little girl.

Jason, Kim's @reply to you doesn't show b/c she has a protected page. Anyone who locks their tweets and @replies someone they don't follow, that person will never ever see it.

So send follow requests or unlock your page, problem solved.

one way that i use twitter is to find out what's happening locally, in real time. for instance, i just heard what sounded like a really loud explosion outside. i searched "san francisco" & instantly found out that it was thunder - not a bomb. thunder is extremely rare here, so it's kinda fun reading everyone's reactions to it.

That really is helpful. I heard some people screaming earlier, so I Tweeted it and found out there was a mass orgy taking place across the street from my house. I think I'll go over there and check it out. If I don't make it back to post by this time tomorrow, call 911.
