I love the Winter Olympics - but being a resident of the host province that has so royally screwed up so many things to do with this - many of which we'll end up paying for in some fashion for years to come - has kind of soured me. When I lived in Calgary, the '88 games there were magical. Different times, I guess - but the organizers of those games knew how to manage things perfectly. The VANOC guys and the province of BC - not so much.

Having said that - I'll still watch, of course  .

S2M and I agree on something

In all seriousness, the Olympics, particularly the Winter Olympics, are heavily geared towards a female demographic. Most of the men I know just aren't into them, even the ones who enjoy skiing and other winter sports that are featured in the games.

They have a phrase for that, it's called poor taste

You & S2M may not be excited to watch men in tights figure skating but c'mon!!! -- You guys gotta admit watching luge & skeleton offer up a couple of thrills on a cold, snowed-in February day. Just think: Someone might go hurling right off that platform & bust their head wide open & if you guys aren't watching you & S2M wouldn't be there to witness all the manliness.

Lest you think I'm talking out of my ass, observe:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/19/sport ... 9adco.html

Notable quotes:

“I don’t typically follow sports at all,” said one member, Josselyn Simpson, an editor at a consulting company in New York, explaining in an e-mail message that her interest lies in “the sense of occasion.”

^^^ Poser Garbage

That is why there are so many spots for the likes of Evista, a prescription drug approved for treating osteoporosis and reducing the risk of breast cancer; L’Oréal Bare Naturale mascara; the Venus Embrace razor (“Reveal the goddess in you”); the Match.com dating service; and the movie “Mamma Mia!”

It is also why myriad spots during the Games feature women athletes past and present, like Cheri Blauwet, Nadia Comaneci, Shawn Johnson, Nastia Liukin, Kerri Strug and Dara Torres.

For the entire 2004 Summer Games, 50 percent of the audience on NBC was composed of women ages 18 and older, according to the data, followed by their male counterparts, at 40 percent.

The Olympics “has sort of been the anti-sports sport for quite a while,” said Peter Gardiner, chief media officer at Deutsch in New York, part of the Interpublic Group of Companies. “That’s why you see so many female-oriented products advertised there.”

He won that season! (I voted. Alot. )

ANYWAY...

I am looking on Team USA's page...

http://www.teamusa.org/?cmpid=2&keyword=Team%20USA

I see Shaun White is back in snowboarding. He was fun as hell to watch in '06

And of course, our young Blackhawk Patrick Kane made the hockey team!
(damn canadians got three of our guys though. bah!)

I'm in the middle of something right now so I ain't sticking around after I post this. I just popped in b/c I saw your (BJG's) link to the team & I wanted to expand on that. Here's another really nice page of all the USA athletes listed in alphabetical order. I can't wait to watch Ben Agosto & Tanith Belbin skate.

http://www.nbcolympics.com/teamusa/athletes/index.html

Okay-----------I'm outta here.

I think winter olympics kick butt over the summer olympics. I look foward to ice skating but also the hockey games mostly, but there are several other things that can be fun to watch. Cross country skiing and curling would NOT be two of them

During the '02 olympics, I had never seen curling and wanted to know what it looked like to play... but no one cares so they air that one in the middle of the night, and I swear, I stayed up to see it. And I swear... don't do that. *yawwwwwnnn* What in heck kind of sport is that? Sweeping the ice with a push broom so some round flat thing can travel reeeeeeallllly slowwwwly across an ice rink? Get bent, I want skates and pucks and action, man.
