MAD respect for Joe Pa for this statement remarking (indirectly) on the Lane Kiffin abrupt exit from Tenn... my thoughts EXACTLY:

Joe Paterno wrote:“I am not saying that every coach should take a vow of poverty or stay at his school for three decades, but we must remember what has made ours a noble profession. It is the mission of our profession: the use of sport to help young men transition from high school and prepare them for the world that awaits them after college. Coaches walk into a recruit’s home and talk about how they will look out for that young man’s future. When the parents or guardians pass their boy on to college, they put his welfare into that coach’s hands. The expectation is that the coach will help to guide him through a very formative time.”

That was actually JayPa's comment, believe it or not.
Still like Lane, though, shady as he comes across.

I just like the comment as a reflection on the whole state of affairs w/ NCAA coaching. I just think of all those great sports movies and (real-life stories too) where the coach character is a caring mentor and helps kids find themselves through the discipline, joys, and tragedies of the game and it just isn't kosher with the money-grabbing reality of today.

I'll list the Top ten from 1900 to present.

Notre Dame and Alabama each have 13
USC and Michigan each with 9
Ohio State and Oklahoma each with 7
Minnesota with 6
Miami, Nebraska and Pittsburgh each have 5

Edited because my second list was for overall championships in any sport.

Lane Kiffin is a piece of shit liar dirtbag who I wouldnt piss on if he were on fire. I hope USC enjoys the additional problems hes gonna bring them on top of the ones they already are facing. Can anyone say "death penalty"????? Hell, theyve already committed a recruiting violation at USC and he hadnt even got off the plane yet....calling Tennessee's recruits telling them not to start class. What a slimeball. I had respect for USC. Not anymore, not with kiffin. I hope he fails there and I wish for USC to lose every game he coaches.

If we go back further to the beginning in 1869, here's the top eight:

Princeton - 28
Yale - 27
Notre Dame - 21
Alabama - 18
Southern California - 17
Oklahoma - 16
Michigan - 15
Ohio State - 14

soon there will be a Gator on that list.

Let's talk "wins" since 1910...hence the term "winningest". And no...it ISN'T PSU.

- Penn State earned the highest Graduation Success Rate and federal graduation rate among teams ranked in the final 2009 Associated Press Top 25 poll, according to NCAA data. Nittany Lion football student-athletes that enrolled in the University in the fall of 2002 earned a federal graduation rate of 89 percent, easily the best among the teams ranked in the final AP poll.

- Penn State's 89 percent federal graduation rate led all Big Ten Conference institutions and was a superlative 34 points above the 55 percent FBS average, according to the NCAA data released last November.

- Penn State's 85 percent Graduation Success Rate was significantly higher than the 67 percent FBS average and was second to Northwestern among Big Ten Conference institutions, according to the NCAA.

- The past two years, Penn State has led all Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) teams in first team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans®. During the 2009 season, three Nittany Lions repeated their Academic All-America® accolades: senior linebacker Josh Hull (Millheim), senior kick snapper Andrew Pitz (Bettendorf, Iowa) and junior center Stefen Wisniewski (Bridgeville). Hull and Pitz were 2008 first team honorees and Wisniewski was a second team selection.

- GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Longtime University of Florida sports broadcaster Steve Babik is facing federal charges of having child pornography on his home computer.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Tuesday that the 50-year-old Babik is charged with one count of receipt and distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.

His attorney, Larry Turner, says Babik appeared in court Tuesday, pleaded not guilty and was released with restrictions. Turner says it was too early in his investigation to comment on the charges.

The University Athletic Association said Tuesday that Babik has been fired.

Babik was the sideline reporter for Gators football games and handled other radio duties. He had been at UF since 1987.

- GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Bond was set at $40,000 Tuesday for former Florida football player Wondy Pierre-Louis after he was charged with choking a girlfriend, according to court records.

The former Gators cornerback turned himself in at the Alachua County jail early Tuesday. He appeared in court later Tuesday, along with the victim, who disputed the claims made in a Gainesville police report.

The victim initially told police that on Sunday morning Pierre-Louis kicked in the door to her apartment, pinned her against a bathroom countertop and choked her. Later, the report said, he threw her down on a bed and began choking her with his shirt. She was not injured.

A man who was at the apartment with the victim fled unharmed, the report said.

Records list felony charges of domestic battery by strangulation, burglary, false imprisonment and obstructing justice, and a misdemeanor count of battery.

The report said Pierre-Louis and the woman have previously lived together and have been dating off and on for about the past year.

State attorney's office spokesman Spencer Mann said the victim disputing the claims now won't change the investigation and charging decision.

Pierre-Louis, recently completed his senior season but has not graduated, was still at the Alachua County jail Tuesday afternoon, a spokesman said. Pierre-Louis' attorney, Amy Osteryoung, did not return a call.

Pierre-Louis is a native of Haiti. His parents survived last week's earthquake, but their family home was destroyed.

Part of the reason Ohio State's numbers aren't as good is the shear number of "early defectors" to the NFL. More than any other team in the Big Ten I'd wager...

Alright SJ, make up your mind now dammit. When we get media attention for Tebow having bible scriptures we get blasted. When a radio guy-who is not even a Gator, just employed by the Gator Radio Network and is a Penn State grad or a guy who doesnt even go to UF anymore get busted we get blasted.
No matter what happens if the Gator name is somewhere attached we will get blasted.
Pathetic.

Where he went to college is of zero relevance. He's been a part of "Gator Nation" for 23 years! This happened as a Gator. You have to take the good with the bad, Tim. You didn't deflect Tebow's accomplishments to whatever high school he went to, so don't try and deflect a 23 year Gator's crimes to his former college. This guy was a Gator and he shamed the nation. Admit it.

no, he worked for the Gator Radio network. Never was a Gator, just a hired hand. If he wasnt getting paid he couldve been at Penn State, FSU, Boise St, etc.......but because his name is tied to the Gator Nation in any way of course its shame, but to him moreso than us. As soon as UF found out he was released from any connections. Kudos to the Gator Nation for handling this promptly thus making me very proud of my alma mater.

The guy is more of a Gator than Urban Meyer! He's been there for 23 years, announced Gators baseball, women's basketball, several other sports and was the host of The Tailgator pregame show for football. This dude has embodied Florida athletics longer than Tim Tebow has been alive!!!

I don't see the relevance of your question. Listen, the guy was a bad apple. I'm not insinuating in any way that the university, its non-pedophile faculty or anyone that attends the school condones what this guy did, but he falls under the umbrella of Gator Nation during the commission of these crimes. Now he's been excommunicated and that's the end of it. Let's call it a day and prep ourselves for some more Gator football arrests.
