Has 'American Idol' jumped the shark?
By Lisa Respers France,CNN
March 5, 2010 11:33 a.m. EST

(CNN) -- Over the years, "American Idol" has been a lot of things: a launching pad for undiscovered talent, fodder for national conversation and even a blending of politics and pop culture (remember the "red state-blue state" debate last season during the Kris Allen-Adam Lambert showdown?).

But never, ever has it been boring. Until now.

"Normally, they don't have this many terrible people," said Dave Della Terza, creator of the Web site Vote for the Worst. "It's not interesting when they are all bad or they are all good. You need a good mix, and they don't seem to have that this season."
Sure, some seasons start out slowly but then pick up steam. A few start out like gangbusters and then seem to fizzle toward the end.

But season nine just appears to be a disjointed hodgepodge of confusing, inconsistent judging, mediocre talent and presumed front-runners who are breaking down in front of us.

Which asks the question, WTF () why the failures?

Has the No. 1 show on television, the program its rivals call the "Death Star," jumped the shark?
Many of the commentors on CNN's "Idol" blog apparently think so.

" 'Idol' this year is so off my TV list," Gregory Gomes wrote. "The contestants are way below standards and at the most are just good party singers."

Danny from Texas said, "I am completely bored with the show this year."

Of course, there are some bright lights this season.

Crystal Bowersox has been viewed as a breath of fresh air among the female contestants, as has Siobhan Magnus. With the men, "Big Mike" Lynche and Lee Dewyze have garnered many positive reviews.

Still, others who were perceived to be major contenders -- such as Andrew Garcia and Didi Benami -- haven't lived up to the promise they showed during the Hollywood rounds. And the men really seem to be having a rough time of it.

"Over the first two weeks of semifinal competition, we've seen the weight of the judges' conflicting instructions, the burden of early expectations, and/or the load of barely masked insecurities prevent each of the 10 remaining men from fully embracing whatever potential they might have to follow in the illustrious footsteps of Ruben Studdard, Bo Bice, Chris Daughtry, Elliott Yamin, David Archuleta, David Cook, and the other men who've transformed themselves from wide-eyed wannabes into bona fide stars under the critical eyes of 30 million TV viewers," Entertainment Weekly scribe Michael Slezak wrote.

So who are we to blame? To trace the mess, we have to go even beyond the year B.E., or "Before Ellen."

"Two years ago, before Kara [DioGuardi] came, ['Idol'] felt like a juggernaut, like it was indestructible, and it was going to be the number one show until the end of time, and everyone had to watch it because it was that powerful," said Glenn Gamboa, a pop music writer for Newsday who covers the show. "Once they started tinkering, people started realizing that 'Oh, it's not that powerful, and maybe I don't have to watch, or I don't have to get all that involved.' "

When producers made the decision to bring DioGuardi on board as a judge, fans were leery. Was she there to replace the beloved Paula Abdul?

Abdul was arguably the heart of "Idol," and her goofy sweetness proved a perfect foil for Simon Cowell's acerbic wit and brutal critiques. Forget the words to your song or crack that final note? No problem; Paula was sure to tell you how cute your outfit looked or how much the viewers loved you.

When Simon threw lemons at contestants, it was Paula who always made the lemonade.

Her departure, followed by the addition of judge Ellen DeGeneres and the announcement that Cowell is leaving at the end of this season, appears to have been a one-two-three wallop that has launched "Idol" into uncharted territory.

"I am starting to wonder if Paula was really brilliant and the one picking all of the talent," Della Terza said, adding that he is finding it difficult to narrow the field this season for his Web site. "Even Simon seems like he is a little checked out this year, and he even had his head under the table during one of the performances."

Twice, the Olympics beat "Idol" in the ratings this season, and the numbers for "Idol's" first results show were its lowest since 2004.

Longtime fan Dianne Emley, who picked the Olympics over "Idol," said she's pretty much lost the focus she had for the show.
"It started for me when they got rid of Paula," said Emley, the author of a successful series of crime novels. "I like Ellen, I really do, but I still don't understand why they brought her on the show."

Newsday's Gamboa agrees. So far, he said, "Ellen has been bad for the show, and the show has been bad for Ellen." And Cowell being halfway out the door hasn't helped the atmosphere.

Still, Gamboa holds out hope that as the season progresses, "Idol" will evolve.

"There's a lot of potential, but there aren't any stars yet," Gamboa said. "In a way, it could make this season more interesting, because there isn't any one that you can definitely say, 'Oh, they are going to win,' or 'They are definitely going to make it through.' It's more of an even playing field, but that doesn't mean it is any more fun to watch at this point."

I've never watched a full season of that show. Put some actual talented singers on there that aren't concerned about image and that can write and perform their own music and I might watch.

I do like idol, but all the negativity this year has just been awful... Ellen could have done wonders for the that, except now she thinks she is a SERIOUS judge...and is as negative as the rest of the judges...
producers got a bad break in Ellen I think... they wanted HUMOR from her... light hearted judging... not what she is doing... and Kara this time around... is just really contradictory each time out... CONFUSING AS HELL... I am not liking her at all this year... and last IDOL does miss Paula, but only because of you never knew what she was going to do next... and that created interest as well, besides the singers... her and Simon had great working chemistry too... which the show is LACKING for sure this time. And the talent is way off this year so far... only a handful of singers are good...

Was just thinking the same thing. Have watched a bit so far and what a boring bunch. The only season I think I watched the full season of was the first with Kelly and Justin, otherwise just tune in when I think of it. Except for last year, found myself tuning in each week just to see what Adam would come up with next. I found his changing up of the songs very creative for the most part. Mad World and Tracks of My Tears floored me. Really liked his and Alison's rendition of Slow Ride too. The guy's got star quality and is talented no doubt, and was a breath of fresh air for a stale AI. Nobody stands out at all this year and coming after Adam last year, maybe it just comes across even more so.

I didn't watch the show last season (just my luck, I know. Sorry, Adam) but I've seen it in season's past & there were times I couldn't decide who I think should get voted off from one week to the next b/c they all seemed so darn good. This year ---- egads ! ----- the opposite holds true. I don't know who they should keep b/c none of them are good. Well, maybe "none" is too harsh. Crystal Bowersox is okay but I'm already thinking she's gotta mix it up a little. If she's going to channel Janis Joplin's style for the duration of the season, I'm gonna grow real tired of her. I think she should try her hand at singing Rickie Lee Jones or Juice Newton, perhaps.

Right now my fave singer is Lee Dewyze. His singing style reminds me of Daughtry.

Ever since Ellen's Dog drama a few years ago, I just feel nothing for her but disgust, just another celebrity using her influence to gain attention for her own issues. Her actions had the lady from the pet agency getting death threats over something that was totally Ellen's fault. She is scum.

It sucks. The singers suck. Ellen sucks. Kara sucks. Randy still Rocks. Simon still has great stuff to say (and I still have a crush on him even with that bad haircut), but looks bored, and you can tell he misses Paula and hates the four judges' setting, instead of three judges. Talk about overkill and wasted space talking.

It's been weird to watch this season. No one seems to shine out as being "a star". 'Tho Casey James is really cute, can sing & play guitar so he might go places. The only judge who seems to know what he is talking about in critiquing (sp) is Randy Jackson...he obviously knows when pitch is off.
The other night no one seemed to be in pitch or they just aren't being true to themselves...except Lily. I think she knows who she is, comfortable in her own skin and her voice is pretty good...I'd pick her to win.
Didi (the one who looks like she will crumble any second) and the former gang guy have unique voices, but they chose some songs that didn't show that last week & it wasn't good, so that shows they are trying to please and not really knowing what works for them. Simon must be sleeping during the singing cuz he told one girl she was great and clearly she was off pitch! He then said the next night after reviewing the show that he made some mistakes in giving compliments when it wasn't true!

I just heard someone called Hayley making a heck of a noise. It was all out of tune and all over the place.
OK she was voted out but she was in the top ten girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If she was in the top ten, what the heck did the rejects sound like?????

It's kind of lost it's appeal for me this year as well. I think the fact that Simon is leaving really did it for me. (I have mad love for him). Plus none of the contestants really stands out for me. I like Ellen as a judge but Kara bugs the crap out of me. I think it's all over after this year.

I could have predicted this, before anyone watched it play out.

The botox lesbo is the final nail in the coffin. While I can appreciate the 'muso' critique that Kara brings to the show, the fact of the matter was that Randy ALREADY filled that niche.

You had randy providing middle of the road, objective muso commentary. Simon was brutally honest and Paula was there to temper simon's often-harsh (yet acurate) criticism.

Kara wasn't needed last year....but they brought her on anyway....and I felt that was a mistake. a 3-judge panel was a perfect number of judges.....

Then, when the replaced Paula with the utterly useless, botox-addicted, clam licker....it totally fucking jumped the shark. She brings NOTHING...absolutely NOTHING to the table. The looks of eye rolling and seat shimmying that Simon and Kara do when that disgusting clit-lapper starts talking is proof positive that Ellen Degeneres was the last nail in the coffin of this sad show.

Simon couldn't have jumped sooner....seriously. I only wish he fucking hari-kari'ed last year. It would have spared us from having to watch Kris Allen win in mediocrity or Adam Suck-Cock-Bert get rammed down our innocent throats.....

I don't know about Idol, but Lady Gaga has, certainly, jumped the shark. She was unique, and into performance art, fine, and can sing live and is extremely talented. But she's officially on overkill with her stupid outfits (latest in this video motorized) and it's no longer about the music, but is about topping her last outfit, and distracts from her vocals sometimes. Here is where she has officially jumped the shark, for me.
