Nintendo unveils 3D DS

Postby Don » Wed Mar 24, 2010 8:58 am

Nintendo is planning a 3D version of its popular DS handheld games console.

The move is a response to the whirlwind of attention being given to 3D content and devices. Rival Sony plans to launch 3D games and TVs later this year.

Most 3D systems require users to wear special glasses but Nintendo said that its system will not need such add-ons.

Nintendo described the 3DS - as the device is likely to be called - the successor to the DS, which has sold over 125 million units worldwide.

Nintendo said that the new console will be compatible with existing games.

It said the games console will be available at some point either this year or early 2011 and promised more details at the E3 games show in June this year

Probably in three or four years. No rush, the PS3 is just now hitting its stride in sales as more people jump on board the Blu-ray train.

360 will always be the benchmark for game consoles, and the next gen console from Microsoft will continue the trend....

First and foremost it is a GAME console. The peripheral. stuff is fluff....God of War sustains that console. Great graphics, poor third party support.... :?

I got a PS3 and 360. For gaming, I'll only play 360. You just can't beat XB Live.

Only use PS3 for Netflix/Blu Ray. From what I understand, it's tough for developers to code PS3 games, at least compared to the 360 development kit.

I know it's a game console :P We have both, and I just don't see a difference as far as graphics. Both systems can be played online with others. The ONLY reason the 360 is used more often for gaming in my house is because more of their friends have that system, and they can play online with them. I don't know what "poor third party support" is because I don't talk techno geek... what do you mean?

I've got co-workers buying the PS3 purely for the Blu-ray. After 18 months or so, other manufacturers stop updating their software and your expensive player becomes nothing more than a doorstop for new films. You don't have to worry about that with PS3. It continuously updates and plays every thing I put in it.

Sean boy , get your facts straight buddy.

When it comes to third party support, EA , the largest game developers in the world , support both systems equally. The final toss up is if u prefer Halo vs God Of War.

Sony also chose the right direction when they brought bluray to the table. Microsofts "HD DVD" support was a major fail. The HD DVDs started collecting dust on the shelves , while bluray took over and ultimately KILLED HD DVD.

Matt ,
sure , Xbox live is a bit ahead of PSN. but don't forget that 360 was out over a year before PS3. Also having to pay a monthly/annual fee to play online is a scam. PSN is completely free and it's catching up with Xbox Live .
In the graphic department , Sony wins hands down.

Like it or not , back in 93 , nintendo made a huge mistake to scrap their project with Sony and let Sony get in the market on their own. I think the ultimate showdown will take place once Sony announces and releases PS4 , while Microsoft will focus on add-ons for 360 such as project Natal.

Not true. I have a Samsung blu-ray...It also has wifi, can update it's firmware through it, and has NetFlix, Pandora, Youtube, and can view media on my PC...just as my PS3 can.

I will never own an Xbox as long as they charge for online gaming. Not even Nintendo is lame enough to do that.

Well kiddo
when Super Nintendo was around , there WAS competition. Besides the primary rival Sega Genesis , the Super Nintendo "died" once the Amiga CD 32, Jaguar64 and the amazing 3DO hit the market.

There were other PS3 exclusives, such as Metal Gear Solid.

The bottom line is that nowadays the exclusives are rare. Call of Duty even found its way to the Wii. So, exclusive titles may have been a deal breaker at launch, but it's really not such an issue any longer.

Sony also chose the right direction when they brought bluray to the table. Microsofts "HD DVD" support was a major fail. The HD DVDs started collecting dust on the shelves , while bluray took over and ultimately KILLED HD DVD.

This is true...but neither the ps3 OR xbox had much to do with it. It was more the HD-DVD manufactures dropping support. I don't know why xbox would even think about adding blu-ray support at that time since it puts money directly into Sony's pocket.

Like it or not , back in 93 , nintendo made a huge mistake to scrap their project with Sony and let Sony get in the market on their own. I think the ultimate showdown will take place once Sony announces and releases PS4 , while Microsoft will focus on add-ons for 360 such as project Natal.

It's WAY too early for new consoles. The Wii could use a boost...but they have been catering to a different audience anyway.

Jaguar 64 was the last Atari console. Neo Geo was another system that was powerful but it's price killed it. Well the system was $249. But EACH game cost $149-$199 !!!

Behshad, you need not lecture me on video game consoles as I was playing them before you. Anything other than the actual gaming experience is junk. And male no mistake, the Xbox 720 is gonna blow the doors off PS4. Secondly, Nintendo should have gotten out of the console business after the 64.....and focused on software. Nintendo has dropped the ball in the hardware dept. Sony is up there, but their gimmicks won't sustain the success.

You mentioned Halo. Sells a lot of copies, but a crap title if you ask me. My view of war games is that they are financed by the military to hook kids on war/shooting, and desensitize them to killing. But I digress...

I know video games...

Sean

I doubt if you played videogame before me but I won't turn this into a pussibg contest.

Nintendo is the smartest one of them all when it comes to business and first party games. Names like Mario and Zelda are associated with videogaming. In the 80s no one called it a videogame. They called it Nintendo. Much like californians call it Coke when it's soda.
Nintendo keeps outselling Sony & Microsoft when it cones to hardware. Wii is a huge success for them and they ARE the masters of HANDHELD gaming ever since the gameboy days.

There are NO plans what so ever from Microsofts camp for a 720. If you followed the last E3 , Microsoft clearly stated that they will focus on 360 for at least 5-6 years with all the add ons planned for it.

Nintendo will always be a major player in the business. They have their loyal audience and they got the amazing name brands. They will continue their success because of their low costs and huge fanbase of families.

The battle between Sony & Microsoft will go on and on , but it's obvious that Sony is investing more money into new technology such as the 3D gaming and PS4 while Microsoft is betting all it's cash on Natal, which eventually will be their deciding factor whether they'll be a hardware manufacturer or switch to software only much like they started ,,, time will tell.

I'll stick to my old vintage games. I tried to get into modern gaming...just haven't been able to...

Tried portable gaming...get a huge headache just trying to look at that tiny screen.

What was my last purchase for the 360? An online download called Mega Man 9. Yeah, my roots are in the 8 and 16-bit eras.

But, I do have a use for a PS3; it's blu-ray capabilities, when my cheapass Wal-Mart special of a non-updating Blu-Ray player can no longer play the newer movies.

B, I was the kid camping out in arcades playing ancient titles like Xevious, Crazy Climber, Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, Tempest, Frogger, Crystal Castles, Warlords, Mr. Do, and Bezerk.....lost a small fortune in the EARLY 80s. I was playing Infocom text adventure games (zork, planetfall, starcross) on my Commodore 64. Even was a regular peruser on the bulletin boards of Compuserve....

I've been immersed In the gaming world since the late 70s....let it go, B.....

there is an attraction at Disney called Disney quest. You pay a days admission, and most of these exact games are there for people to play over and over, without putting any money in them. 4 or 5 floors of 70's arcade games  Why do I have a feeling if you entered there you'd have a heart attack from the adreniline rush? My family can spend an entire day there

B is only a little bit younger than you. I bet he's been addicted about as long
