When you burn a CD...

Postby conversationpc » Thu Apr 01, 2010 5:37 am

Does anyone else spend as much time as I do organizing the tracks on the CD? I don't just dump them on the disc in alphabetical or chronological order. I try to put them into some kind of logical order like similar sounding tracks or songs with a similar theme, that kind of thing.

I don't burn CDs for myself any more, though I should, because I don't have an auxiliary port in my car and my iPod radio adapter is subject to horrendous quality depending on where I'm at. Plus, the quality is better any way. When I do, it's definitely thematic and very organized.

Sometimes I think the iPod format ruins the enjoyment of music for me a bit because I always have everything at my disposal. I used to get in the prog mood or pop mood or 80s mood and that's where I'd stay for the ride back in the CD mix days.

If I am making a mix CD then YES, I order the songs so they will flow. If it is simply a storage kinda thing than NO, it's alphabetical or chronological. But, like others have said, with all the music at my disposal, whether on hard drive or iPod, I don't burn CDs too often anymore. Hell, I don't even do playlists on the iPod. I just put it on random at let it go....

Unfortunately, I don't have a player in the truck that can play anything other than normal CD audio tracks, so I can't just burn a disc of MP3s.

Same here. A car player that would accept something more than a cd would be nice, but it's a luxury that I don't have. If I'm just burning something to archive it, it doesn't matter. If I'm burning a personal "best of" cd to listen to while driving or otherwise, I spend as much time trying to figure out what order to put the songs in as what songs should be included. For what it's worth, most of my cds are arranged like a concert (ie uptempo opening, then dig into the catalogue a bit, then back to uptempo for the end). For some bands where there isn't much variation within the albums, the order matters less...for others, it matters a lot. It takes work, but

Also, I tend to prefer live versus studio most of the time. Main reason is energy and the vibe you can get when a band is "clicking", but also because you can make anybody sound good in a studio--live (if it's REALLY live) separates the really good bands from the pretenders. There's also the bands/artists that produce magic playing live that they never really capture in a studio environment (John Farnham is one of those that comes to mind). It all depends on the band itself.

Absolutely. One of my pet loves...arranging compilations into an album style flow and re-arranging bad album sequencing into how it should be :)

Also absolutely! But then I also file my CD's, vinyl and cassettes in alphabetical order and have them all documented in an Access database, right down to individual tracks on each  . And I just got myself a new-fangled label maker on the weekend so I can label the storage shelves appropriately. My husband says I'm becoming Monica (from Friends) .

This digital age has made it so there is no excuse for not having good and an adequate amount of tunes in your car. I was just thinking about how lucky we are. :D

I have over 1000 gigs of just music stored.

Ditto, I agree with both you guys. What's the point of burning a CD if there is no rhyme or reason to it? We're doing it right, everyone else is wrong :D

Speaking of making cds for others, my sis asked me to burn her some CDs because she travels a lot. (flight attendant)
So, I ask, what do you want? She says oh give me some Journey and Heart. I burned the entire discography of Journey, Heart and Steve Perry in the exact album and song orders. She was stoked. :D

I still burn cds from time to time, and I do spend a lot of time trying to make sense of my crazy mixes to make the cd flow it is an art. :) The ultimate was making the mix tape, because you were forced to listen to the entire song, those were the days.
