I don't know how I got the clip of Neal, SP and JC on my mp3 player but I heard it today on there vs youtube or whatever the media was the first time I heard it. I was flat out amazed by both clips. SP sounded the same to me as he always did--maybe a little quieter or weaker or whatever term would work better but the underlying voice was there no mistake about it (to me, of course). And Neal's playing was breathtaking--it sounded as though he knew exactly what notes to play for SP as the song went along and they wove their instruments together into a beautiful, sad, glorious melody; I even got some tears when SP sang that beginning of Lights (that prelude I'm not too familiar with but I've been humming to myself for hours, lol) and Neal played exactly as though to underscore the beauty of the song but not to dominate it... There is almost nothing on earth like those 2 when they play together... I've read on here where a lot of peeps think that SP got up there and sang without any rehearsal or practice and if he did, I just can't believe that there is anything really seriously wrong with his voice even today. Talking me out of this idea is going to be difficult, lol. Well, I feel myself starting to ramble. However, listening to those 2 clips today made me realize again why I love Journey so much.

It's amazing how much debate there is about this performance...and I'm sure a few fires will start up on this thread as well. So many people are critical of it, and I can understand why, to a point. It's not the most polished performance, and the 'legend' that goes with it (Perry forgot the lyrics, yadda yadda yadda) only add a bit of tarnish.
But, people tend to put too much stock in things that they've read or heard from others, and somehow decide to preach it as gospel.

I said this on another post...you take from it what you make of it. Personally, I love the performance and take it for what it is...an emotional moment at a memorial. Perry's voice wasn't 100% for sure, but everyone forgets that he wasn't singing for a few years at this point. No time for rehearsal. And considering that most of the crowd were Dead-heads, Perry did a hell of a job trying to connect with the crowd. To me (I'll say it again...to ME), it's still a magical moment in the band's history.

I agree. When you see you favorite band reunited unexpectedly on stage together, it's very moving, and especially at this memorial. Of course, I guess not so moving for Perry as he did nada with them for years after that and moved on to his next project, solo in 94.

I was there. It was a magical day all around. This whole memorial concert was thrown together very quickly (a little more that a week if I recall correctly). The fact that Steve even showed was a character + for him in my book. And I have been very critical of his character on other issues. Sure it wasn't perfect, but it was spur of the moment.

It was a great day of music and memories, something San Francisco has not seen the likes of since.

For someone who at the time hadn't listen to music for 2 years and hadn't sang in almost 4 years that was not a bad performance at all by Steve. It was spur of the moment and the fact that Journey was asked to take part in the memorial and that Steve came and sang makes it all that much more special as well as magical.
