Dang, Of A Lifetime...

Postby fredinator » Wed Jun 02, 2010 9:54 am

is an incredible song... I LOVE the 70s; I wish Neal would play now like he did then--more scream, less doodling of the notes (love ya, Neal).. This song is so rockin'--some of the tunes off those old Journey albums really remind me of Jimi Hendrix plus I really, really, really miss the organ on there along with hearing Ross loud and clear--lots of bass, lots of drums and cymbals clanging but mostly the guitar work on there is just fantastic. Okay, I'm rambling in one long run-on sentence, sorry... Even the production sounds totally different, raw and edgy, not so polished I guess. Anyway, just thought I would post my thoughts while I'm listening to this song over and over again :) .

I love it, too, Fred. Here's the song for those not familiar with it:

One day I was wondering if there were other nuts like me who liked this kind of shit? Shortly after that I found MR.

Good stuff! :D

I owned that album on cassette back in the day. I recently reacquired it from WalMart for $5 on CD.

To me it seems like these are the tracks that really show what a great guitar player Neal is--so young yet sounds like JH or Eric Clapton on some of these tunes. These are the songs that I think are overlooked a lot especially when they say Journey is cheesy or whatever. It's too bad really; these are pure, old school rock and roll...

If any of these people who think Journey is gay or cheesy would take the time to listen to their music all the way thru, since the beginning, I know they would understand that Journey has given us a huge treasure of works. There are not many bands that can boast of a catalog like that.

I'm at work so I can't access YouTube but I'm guessing you're referencing SP... If you are, you really shouldn't speak of SP with disrespect because even though I believe Neal = Journey, I don't think they would have gotten as famous as they did without him... Which I don't really know if that is such a great thing because they sure paid a price for that kind of fame. Anyhoo, SP is in a league of his own so maybe you shouldn't refer to him as "that guy."

Should we start the Neal Quote machine now, when he talks about how Steve brought all the success to the band or how the band needed to find someone that sounds like Perry?
Neal's Journey equaled getting threatened from a record label that your ass is getting dropped if you don't hire a real singer.
Neal's Journey equaled having shows performed with a tape recorder because some band leader was too greedy or scared to walk away from the money that was on the table and tell Azoff, enough is enough, the singer is toast and we can't tour.
Should we mention that the only successful Journey album since the departure of Perry had to include eight songs co-written by Perry in order to sell enough to make platinum?
Of course, we really don't have to mention any of these things at all but since it was felt that Perry should be included in this thread, why not expand upon it a little, right?

Amen.

And I love Only the Young, one of my all-time favorites. It is everything that the Journey signature sound encompasses as far as a Journey rock song.

I posted the Neal = Journey thing to generate a little discussion but no shit-throwing, Steveo... You cannot and must not refer to SP as just some guy; there really has never been anyone else like him... Just watch or listen to AI or those other talent shows.. No one can or has sung rock and roll like he has..

I loved Only The Young but I also love Send Her My Love... Would that be a rocker or a ballad? Hmmmm, I guess a ballad but it's more melancholy than romantic pining and so forth.

Your first guess was closer. It's actually from the Final Fantasy Series so it defies conventional description.

Thank God for Cain. This forum never gives him much in the way of high fives. Their period with him, after Rolie, brought many great songs.
