that pushing thing is pretty much his trademark, and his natural range...and to his credit, he can still sing in the same key as 30 years ago. His tone has changed a bit over the years (mainly in the late 90s/early 2000s when he was in a big drug mess--cocaine does wonders on vocal cords), but he kept his range. That distinctive tone is also why people either love his voice or compare it to an angle grinder--and worse. Interestingly, apparently one of the few singers who sings with their false vocal cords (ie he can have laryngitis and not be able to speak at all, but can sing perfectly). Rather strange...
speaking of people who can sing...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lKHwz06EAs. Never went out of Gospel, but one of the best high tenors I've ever heard--very much on the level with Perry for natural voice ability, and a lot of depth to the voice especially for the range. He isn't even breaking a sweat on this one (which is more pop ballad than gospel).
good stuff....he does well on that one. Easy one to oversing, and he doesn't fall into that trap.
