Star Wars film saga to be converted into 3D

Postby Don » Thu Sep 30, 2010 2:34 am

It looks like every Sci-Fi/Fantasy movie that did well at the box office will eventually get a 3D reboot.

The entire Star Wars film saga is to be converted into 3D, director George Lucas has announced.

A statement on the Star Wars website said: "The cutting edge conversion will take that immersion to the next thrilling level."

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace is expected to be released in 2012, with the other films to follow.

Last month, it was announced that 3D films had helped boost UK box office takings by 8%.

It had been reported that Lucas had delayed converting the Star Wars movies into 3D until there were enough screens available to screen them.

Following the success of James Cameron's Avatar, which broke several box office records, 3D movies have become more common.

This year, Alice In Wonderland, Toy Story 3 and Shrek Forever After were all released in 3D and proved to be a big hit at cinemas.

But reactions to the news about Star Wars have been mixed.

"Watching TPM (The Phantom Menace) in 3D would be like the car actually crashing into your face as opposed to just unfolding before your eyes," British Star Trek actor and science fiction fan Simon Pegg said on micro-blogging site Twitter.

Another user dubbed GeorgeMcCallum added: "Do you not think that Star Wars in 3D may ruin the context of the film, messing around with a movie which is already so popular?"

Industrial Light & Magic, the part of Lucas's production company Lucasfilm that specialises in visual effects, will supervise the project.

ILM's John Knoll said: "Getting good results on a stereo conversion is a matter of taking the time and getting it right.

"It takes a critical and artistic eye along with an incredible attention to detail to be successful. It is not something that you can rush if you want to expect good results.

"For Star Wars we will take our time, applying everything we know both aesthetically and technically to bring audiences a fantastic new Star Wars experience."

In April, DreamWorks announced the first three Shrek movies would be converted to 3D.

It has also been reported that Warner Bros has plans to rerelease the Harry Potter films in the newly revived format.

The Phantom Spinach is the biggest piece of shit ever.

THE PREQUELS FUCKING SUCKED!!! F U, GEORGE LUCA$!!!!

When's Howard The Duck 2 coming out, Georgy??!!

P.S. Long live the "standalone" 1977 Star Wars film. Should've left it alone, George. Ever heard of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"?

Alan Dean Foster's Splinter of the Mind's Eye should be brought to the screen, just to turn the Star Wars universe on it's head.

No shit. That is what George should've filmed. Honestly, the guy's writing sucks ("I'm the king of wooden dialogue!") and his direction isn't anything to write home about. That '77 movie is cool, though. I can watch Empire (used to be my fave), but I can't stomach anything else.

That Natalie Portman SUCKED in those movies. Bad direction for the character, maybe, I dont know. She makes all of them unwatchable. I liked Ep. I, except for Jar Jar.

I'm REALLY tired of everything coming out in 3D. Especially every kids movie. It's expensive enough to see a movie these days, and they tack on that extra money for the glasses, so a matinee isn't even cheap anymore. I don't think the quality is that great for them to keep doing this.

They are killing the "thrill" of 3D. It used to be a special deal if something was "ZOMG! 3D!!"

Now it's like "ok, YAWN."

I've given up on 3D. There are plenty of regular theatres around here, and the bottom line is that 3D doesn't make a better movie.

Exactly! I mean Toy Story 3 was in 3D and I didn't see one reason it needed to be. Things weren't jumping out at us! To me it's another way to make money! Charge us to use glasses they recycle and barely spend anything for!!

Dampen Spinach was horrible. HORRIBLE. Nobody wanted to see the dreaded Lord Vader as a stupid little punk. The final saber battle was cool, but that couldn't redeem the previous 100 minutes of celluloid diarrhea that Luca$ giddily sprayed audiences with. The pod race was gay as fuck, JarJar was gayer than fuck, the droid battle was Krofft Superstars worthy, and the lame-o space battle at the end (with Anakin "saving the day" in a craft he wasn't even controlling) was beyond ghey.

People complain about Natalie Portman, but at least she's eye candy.

Those glasses went in my purse at the end of TS3 and came home with us  I thought with what they charged, plus they were individually wrapped (not like at Disney) they were to keep and the recycle bin was merely a suggestion if you didn't want them  oops!

You don't have to recycle them...I think they just hope you will  but they are useless anyway because they keep charging you for new ones each time you go. That's how you know it's about making more money, or they'd let you get your own pair and recycle them by reusing them!

Maybe they could get some people that could actually act instead? Haven't seen so much wood since I visited the Washington Rainforest.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.
