Joe Elliott was a stud in the early and mid-80's, and the hardcore DL fans, the only fans that should matter to a group/artist, still enjoy the shows. But he should stop smoking and take his craft a bit more seriously.

Interesting, Dan. If the hardcore fans mattered they would have stuck to the Pyromania style and not ventured into the pop-rock arena.

Speaking of Def Leppard, Phil was on L.A. Ink last night. He and his woman were getting their names etched onto each other's tummies.

I'm pretty sure that the hardcore fans (and the masses) liked Hysteria.

Hysteria came out of the gate really slow and the band felt they had screwed up. Mutt Lange wanted it be the hard rock equivalent of Thriller, where every song could be released as a single.
After Pour Some Sugar On me was released and the Video hit MTV, that's when the album exploded. Any fans they lost because of the musical change of direction were replaced by newer ones as Hysteria followed Pyromania's success by hitting Diamond with over 10 million copies sold in the U.S. alone.

I don't equate units sold with whether something is a classic, or a talent thing. Def Leppard sold out on Hysteria. Some could say Sell out really means Out Sell...but to me, Pyromania was their best album....and BTW, Pyro had Thriller to contend with. What competition did Hysteria have? By the time Hysteria rolled around the guys had lost their balls anyway....

High 'n' Dry is my favorite album by Def Leppard. Pyromania started their cross over into pop and once Pete Willis was out of the band, they never seemed to return to their hard rock roots.

Hysteria and Appetite for Destruction were both released in the summer of 1987 and it took both of them until the summer of 1988 to reach the top of the charts, something unheard of now as acts usually can't build up that kind of momentum so late after their initial releases anymore.

I think Women, Rocket and Gods Of War could have (more or less) seamlessy fit on to Pyromania. The rest, yes, was a bit "poppier."

I do love High n' Dry too! It has a couple of my favorite Lep songs on it! I know it's rarer for women to like that album.

Slippery When Wet, though released in the summer of 1986, was 1987's leader in album sales. It ended up selling 12 million copies in the U.S. and 28 million worldwide. That was as good of a time as any to sell a shitload of albums ... unless your douchey singer decided to fire members and go in a softer direction.

Though Bringin on the Heartbreak is my FAVORITE Lep song of all time, my other close second favorite on that album is Let it Go which I got to hear twice live a couple years ago :P and yes... I know what the lyrics mean :P Lady Strange is good too! So :P :P :P

Typo on my part. Hysteria, released Aug 87 reached #1 on the Album chart last week of July and first week of August 88.

It came out July 31, 1987, right before Hysteria and hit #1 the middle August 1988, a few days before Sweet Child Of Mine was released as a single. It hit number one again for three weeks at the end of September and resurfaced for one more week at #1 in Feb 1989, a bit more than 18 months after it had originally been released.

I agree...I've long enjoyed "Pyromania" better than "Hysteria" and "High 'N' Dry", too, for that matter. More hard rock and less polished. "Hysteria" certainly is a good album but I'd go with the other two first.

I just don't understand it. There was a time when bands really put in the effort. They were gifted musicians who could 1) Read music. 2) Write music 3) Sing in key 4) Compose their own lyrics 5) Compose their own arrangements. What do we have today? Beibers and Brittanys, rappers who can't sing at all, "rockers" that lip-sync, "pop" stars that need multi-million dollar machines to keep them in key. MUSICIANS who knew their craft..

You know who I really miss? The 70s bands like ELO, LRB...etc...

From interviews over years that I've seen/read, I think the "polished" sound to Hysteria is mostly due to Mutt Lange. I remember an interview with Joe where he talked about how Mutt would make them do things over and over and over until it was near perfection. Still a great album either way IMO, one of my top fav albums.

Pretty much as expected...out of pitch, out of tune. In other words, typical MeatLoaf. I've seen worse, but at least he has a voice here, unlike his American Idol performance or lipped Today show performances. This song is one of the best on the cd, but it's probably not a good choice to do live. The chorus isn't as immediate as the annoying but catchy Los Angeloser.

Maybe because he sucks. Fat blowhard one hit wonder motherfucker. Always hated his fat ass and his ridiculous name. What, was Porkchop taken? Lambchop? How about Quarterpounder? Jesus Christ already. What a fucked up thread. How did we go from Meatloaf, to talking about Def Lippard and their sell out of the mid nineties to Meatloaf again? I'll never eat that shit again because of this fuckin' guy's name.
