Let me preface this by saying that I'm a huge Jeremy Brett Fan and am very biased against other variations on the role. That said, I was pleasantly surprised by the job Robert Downey did in the recent film version.

This new incarnation from Masterpiece Theatre is a bit different as it brings Holmes into the 21st century but appears (to me anyway) to still keep his character closer to Jeremy Brett's interpretation of the man.

I've always enjoyed all the versions of Sherlock Holmes but like you, Jeremy Brett is by far my favorite. I will definitely be watching at least the first few episodes. I'm not a big proponent of taking a classic and moving it into a different time period to make it more "relevant" to the audiance. They do that with Shakespeare's plays all the time and it never works for me. Still, I'm willing to keep an open mind. Thanks for the tip Don.

The new Sherlock series is written and overseen by Steve Moffat, who is probably the best thing to have happened to Dr. Who in over a decade. I don't like the updated setting either, but Moffat's track record is solid.

Have these episodes aired in the States yet? I saw them in the UK (there were three in all) and they were BRILLIANT! This is Steven Moffat's baby, and the actor that plays Sherlock was original chosen to be the new Doctor Who. Apparently he didn't like the idea of having his imagine on lunch boxes, and passed on the role. So the show is essentially Doctor Who without the alien, tech type stuff, set in present day London. My family are HUGE Doctor Who fans so needless to say, we were blown away.

How was Martin Freeman? I loved him in The Office. How does his performance as Watson measure up against his predecessors (Law, Hardwicke and David Burke)?

I didn't care for The Office, so I don't know what he was like in that.

I watched it thinking it would be dreadful, but I loved it! Episode one and two in particular.
This Holmes actor is very reminiscent of the Tom Baker Dr Who - you'll know what I mean when you see it. And you can tell that the writer of this has been involved in Dr Who. There's a similar air about it.

The guy who plays Mycroft is one of the guys from the dark comedy show "The League of Gentlemen" and he's appeared in and written some of the latest Dr Who episodes. He's superbly creepy.

The one I'm not quite sure about is the guy playing Moriarty. Not so much him but the way he speaks his lines in an annoying sing song voice. He's menacing without being obvious, but the way he pitches his voice seems more silly than deadly.

But see what you think.

I was thinking those same thoughts while watching the trailer. I grew up watching Baker's Who on PBS in the 70s. Much like my feelings regarding Jeremy Brett, I am biased toward Tom Baker over the other Doctor's but probably more so because Tom was my first introduction to that particular show.

Just watched "A Study In Pink". I have to say it was excellent. The use of pop up text to help viewers follow along was done very well. Definitely can't wait for next week's episode. I liked it. The introduction of Mycroft Holmes was especially clever in the way it played with audience expectations. The big reveal of the killer was sort of a letdown, but like many mysteries, the payoff is always secondary to the chase. I thought the Robert Downey Jr. movie was more fun, but this was damn good.

I agree with you about the killer. The whole thing with that was totally hollow. I was thinking there would be some kind of tie in with the original story, maybe a cult or something but alas, not to be.

I still enjoyed it, although on occasion, I couldn't stop myself from seeing Benedict's Sherlock as Tom Baker's Dr. Who; the scarf, the hair, the quick witted replies. That's fine though.

The second ep is not quite as good as the first...still very much worth watching though. The third picks up the pace a bit more and is at least as good as the first, maybe even better. Definitely a good trilogy to introduce a new series.

I see the next set of shows won't be out until Aug 2011. That's quite a wait for television, but seeing as they're more like 90 minute movies in reality, I guess that is the right pace.

I watched the first movie and it was awesome.

Here in the US, they edited out a key part of a scene. It turned out to be rather important when someone that had seen the UK cut told me what had been cut out.

Otherwise, Benedict Cumberbatch was awesome as Holmes. And I say that being an avowed fan of Jeremy Brett's performance as Sherlock.

Part of the scene with Sherlock and the killer conversing. The scene lacked a bit of sense, and what was cut tied the stuff together better.

The second episode was pretty good, I thought. They used the bits from The Sign of Four novel very sparingly like the tie in they did with A Study In Scarlet during the first show. I enjoyed the fact that it had a little more action this go around. Can't wait for Episode Three.
