considering the amount of playback that goes on for a bunch of these shows (even in those days), it doesn't surprise me in the slightest. 1:53 in the video is pretty obvious that Perry is lip-synching.

Most of the time, it was either the whole band plays to a backing track including vocals....or the lead singer gets to be live and the band plays to a backing track. Judging by the fact that Perry was definitely not live on this show, I'd say the band wasn't either. The technology was well in use by the late 1970s, so I wouldn't think much of it. Chances are ANY band on that show at that time would be subject to the same rules. Some singers are just better at pulling the illusion off than others.
