Could use a few good thoughts my moms way

Postby artist4perry » Tue Mar 08, 2011 10:37 am

Folks I could use a few good prayers and thoughts my moms way.........whatever works for you.

Mom has been having trouble with severe back pain.........must run in the family.......and she has been going to the doctor.

My mom had breast cancer then chemo to fight it. Unfortunately the chemo has left her bones brittle and thin. She suffers from Osteoporosis at a very young age.

When they x-rayed her back they discovered 3 fractures of the discs to her back! Not from any injury, but just the weakness in her bones.

This Sunday morning she tried to get up, and she could not stand much less walk. My mom is in her early 60's.

My heart is breaking for her. She seldom ever sits still for a second, is always on the go. To see her in so much pain, and to know all she can do is take medicine and wait for it to heal is so sad!

My mom lived in the time where they worked from sun up till sun down.
Hurts to see her like this and I wish her pain to be mine.

I'm sorry to hear about your mom Ginger. Living in pain is no fun, but to be sidelined to a chair when you're so active has to be torturous. I'm sure her recovery will be quick and complete. She sounds like someone that won't stay idle for very long, so she's going to do what she needs to do to get better.

Thanks Rick.......Honestly mom's biggest problem with recovery is MOM! She won't stay sidelined enough to get well! I have offered Dad duct tape if it will help her stay put!

Put her on a calcium rich diet with plenty of fish and green leafy vegetables. Proper nutrition is always essential when battling illnesses and injuries. Changing my diet and eating that way changed the way I feel virtually overnight.

Good advice. She is already doing those things. She eats little red meat. The Chemo took so much, the doctor said her bones were see through on the x-rays!

Sorry to hear about your Mom. :( Compression fractures at such a young age is very scary and must be painful and depressing for her. Has she been taking any of those drugs prescribed for people with osteoporosis like Boniva? That has been helpful for some people to strengthen weak bones.

Hope she feels better soon. A friend of mine, her mom is battling bad back problems now too, she had to had spinal fusions and it's been 8 months and she still can't walk alone. I know all too well how hard it is to watch a parent go down.

Thanks for the kind thoughts. It helps.........truth is I am the one that is scared. I know she is too, but she puts on a brave face.

She cannot take Boniva, I have already suggested this to her. The doctor says she needs a shot once a month.......problem is it is $700 dollars a month! She is retired so that is too much for her. I asked her if she has contacted the company that makes it to see if she can get help with the costs. She said unless your dirt poor............and I mean DIRT poor they cannot help! Sad. :(

Ginger, I am so sorry.

Recovery is still very possible.

Does she have fractured vertebra, or herniated discs? They are two entirely different maladies with far different rehabilitative procedures.

She needs to see a NEUROSURGEON ASAP - not an Orthopaedist.

Sending a old, fresh out of chemo patient into a big SCI surgery is ludicrous and dangerous. So chill out with the dramatic "ASAP" stuff.

Trust the doctors, Ginger. A good diet doesn't hurt, but don't expect it to be a miracle cure. Spend time with her and be there for her if she needs any help. Try telling her to relax, doing splits and cartwheels doesn't help much for the healing process. Don't wait it out either, if her health quickly deteriorates.

Good luck!

I don't suffer from long-term back pain but I know how painful and debilitating it can be even in the short-term. I hope your mom is doing better.

Thanks, she is as I said, using a walker..........I hope the meds help her heal with less pain. She was so stubborn about taking the medicine, that she cut her dose in half! The doctor told her if she does not want to die of a heart attack from the stress the pain is putting on her heart, she better take her meds and all of them! She is afraid of addiction, but the doctor said for what duration she is taking them it is not an issue.

Only just seen this thread.
I have no medical advice to give.
But it sounds like your Mom has inner strength and positivity - those two things are key in fighting stuff and overcoming obstacles.

But no matter how strong a persons Will is, those chemo drugs really do drain energy and strength.
Hopefully she will build up strength again - IF she stops using her fighting instinct to defy the doctors by not taking her full Meds.

Tell her to give in to the Docs and do as she is told for now. THat way she is conserving and storing up her strength for later.

love and hugs to you and your Mom.
