JOURNEY IN SÃO PAULO - CONCERT REVIEW

Postby SilvioRodrigues » Sat Apr 02, 2011 11:29 am

I've had promised to give an honest review about the show...so, here's the truth...It was the best show I've ever seen in my life!!!!

I went to São Paulo with only one thing in mind...to enjoy this show like it was my last day on Earth. I've arrived at Via Funchal at 4 pm...I was the fourth one, so I laughed to myself and thought "Hey, I can stand in front of Arnel's mic!!" When the gates were opened at 8 pm, I took place exactly where I was thinking. At that hour Via Funchal was still empty, but when The Sweet went to the stage the place was almost full.

After the initial shock to see The Sweet dressed like that and to feel concerned about Steve Priest's health ( he had to sit down in a chair for several times to be able to finish the set), the band did a great show and a good warm up for what was about to come.

After 20 minutes the lights went out and Journey hit the stage for a sold out concert...what can I say? Well, all of you should have seen the Separate Ways video on youtube...I went nuts, people went nuts. I think the band really looked surprised with the crowd's reaction. They were smiling!!!

The crowd sang along with the band almost the whole set, we sang even the guitar melodies (like Rush's YYZ in the Rock in Rio DVD), in songs like Be Good to Yourself, Stone in Love and Who's Crying Now.. The crowd were so noisy that Ross put his fingers to his ears during Faithfully, joking with the crowd...

About the new songs, Human Feel was the most well recieved in my opinion. I've liked Edge of the Moment and City of Hope, which tends to be a memorable song. Resonate and Chain of love were also well recieved.

About the hits, wow!! When I saw everybody singing songs like Only the Young and Ask the Lonely I realized that I wasn't the only brazilian who loves Journey. It was an unique experience to hear live songs like Lights, DSB, Open Arms, Wheel in the Sky, Faithfully, Any Way You Want It, Escape...it was a dream coming true! Like Michigan Girl said, I was in the clouds or beyond. There was no place to think about who was this singer, where does he born, who's better...anyway, it was something between me and my favorite band that was right in front of me...no matter what people think, for me that band is JOURNEY: Neal, Jon, Ross, Deen and Arnel !!!

About the band, Deen was beating like a monster and singing like an angel as usual. People went nuts with his performance on Mother, Father...

Jonathan seemed to be happy on stage, raised his fist to the air, smiled sometimes and interacted with the audience.

Neal...Neal is awesome. He did a dozen of solos right in front of me...He was smiling all the time, looking at the eyes of the people in the front row. He throwed me a guitar pick but it went to the floor ...

Arnel? Sings like hell !!! I don't know if there are videos of Open Arms available, but take a look the crowd's reaction and then the band's reaction. It was amazing !!! He tries to interact with people all the time. He went to the fence three times during the set. Took my hand twice !!! There was an emotional and funny moment with me and Arnel. They were playing Human Feel and he stood right in front of me singing the chorus and looked at me exactly when I was singing "RISE UP!!" (Courtesy of Rip's videos!!) . He pointed at me with a smile and gave a sign of approval. I felt like I was part of the band!!! (Did I hear this before or something close?) He seemed to be touched by emotion most of the times. That emotion flowed into the audience that gave more emotion in his favor.

Last, but not least...Ross...Ross is the man!!! He does funny faces all the time joking with the other guys and the audience. He doesn't stop, walking all over the stage, and of course, is a brilliant bassist.

Well, that’s it. March 30 used to be a sad date for me. It was my father's birthday. He died 18 years ago at the age of 50, devasted by cancer...so now Journey gave me a payback , gave me a chance to look at that date at the calendar again with joy.

I think it's the most honest review that I could write. Now I can talk with you with more arguments. Now I can say that I've seen Deen, Neal, Ross, Jon and Arnel playing live...and this is JOURNEY !!!

See ya!!!

P.S. I'm gonna post some photos next monday, ok?
...and sorry for possible english mistakes...

Great review, Silvio. It really is about the live concert experience with Journey. Great musicians. I'm glad it was everything you wished for,and that it was held on a memorable day for you. I saw a clip there where the audience was singing also to the guitar part of a song. Talk about energy at that concert.l I'm sure the band was feeding off you guys.

Excellent review, Silvio! Man, I thought we had a great crowd in Chile -- it was one of the best I've ever experienced, but the participation of those fans in Brazil cannot be touched! Amazing!

I'm glad AP saw you singing, haha... someone mentioned to me in Chile that they saw me singing and that I was the only fan who knew all the words (thanks to APR's careful deciphering of the Vegas videos). We need to teach Neal how to aim, I think! Every time I reached out, about 3-4 times, he tossed me a pick and each one flew a few inches over my head, lol! It's the same at every concert -- about 2 inches over my head. Next time I'm holding my arms up to block it. :)

Thanks again for the review!

Lmao, yeah I agree, RIP. I'm sure you're a crazy like me and get your ass down on the ground and crawl for a .2cent pick, lmao.

Good stuff and outstanding review, Silvio. Your writeup reminds me a lot like my experiences up front with Arnel in Youngstown, Ohio and Scranton a couple years back. Arnel really loves his fans and high fived me about 10 times. He really makes it feel like he cares about every individual in there. J.C threw me a couple pick's as well. Awesome experience with Arnel out front, and that was 2008. It looks to me they kicked it up another notch. So happy you experienced such a thrill.

Solid review.

Having seen the Steve, the Steve, didn't see the JSS, but I saw the Arnel multiple times...I say I see it like you did. Everytime and I mean everytime I watch this band play...I SEE JOURNEY. I get transported back into time where parachute pants and OP Shirts with no sleeves ruled the scene at a school near you and peeps would say," HEY BUD...LET'S PARTY!!" Journey is one of the few acts in this world, because of that amazing collection of music and history, that has the ability to do that.

If I ever make it to Brazil and I see a concert with you...I'll tell you, "HEY BUD...LET'S PARTY! 8)
