Have a Good Time - Unused Arrival song

Postby The_Noble_Cause » Mon Apr 11, 2011 12:09 am

This unused Arrival song has been floating around the net forever. Rich from BT has uploaded it on YouTube. If you've never heard it before, now you can. Cool tune – not exactly Journeyish. Still, would've gladly had this on Arrival in place of a weepy ballad or two. This is back in 1999 and while Augeri is sounding good, his limitations are already present. Most obviously, the lack of falsetto or any sort of subtlelty. He just attacks the song full-bore from his chest, little wonder he blew out his pipes.

I lilked Have A Good Time a lot when I heard it in Camden in 99 and was very disapointed it didn't make Arrival. Played World Gone Wild that night too.

That tune feels like something off of Tyketto, more than Journey. Its not bad, though.

This was pre-arrival - what's the assumption it was part of the Arrival sessions?

See Red13JoePa's post two above yours. Bands sometimes work on songs for years before deeming them fit to appear on an album.

I heard this live in 99 and HATED it...My friend and I looked at each and was like "if this is what the new stuff will be like, please stick to the classics and don't bother"

World Gone Wild was much better.

I'm grateful that Have a Good time never made it onto any kind of Journey CD. But I know that some folks do like it, so cool beans on finding the live boots/you tube vids!

Great tune! Reminds a lot of Tyketto indeed
I had seen "have a good time" as a song title in some bootlegs maybe , but for some reason i thought it was this intro before "lovin' touchin' squeezin'" at 2001 dvd...

The live and breath intro is also cool, good that we can hear this rarities, thanks for the link..

Might as well just use this thread to post all unused Arrival tracks -

This one, "Lose Myself in You", is covered by Cain.

This one by Blades/Schon, "One World" iscovered by Mickey Thomas.

Wow. Augeri had power and range in '99, that's for sure.

Come on...there is absolutely no indication this song had anything to do with Arrival - I almost liken it to "dusting off cobwebs" with the efforts to write "Remember Me" - a decent tune is it's own right, but nothing magical - I think they pulled off a lot with Arrival song-writing and partnership wise (See also the enlistment of certain co-writers)...this song sounds like they were still finding their way.

No idea where you're coming from. It is widely accepted that any new material the band tested out on the road in 98 and 99 would find its way onto Arrival. That's why they were debuting it at Journey concerts (duh). As for "Remember Me", that was a collaboration between Schon, Cain, and Blades - the very same trio responsible for the best songs on "Arrival". Like all their Arrival efforts (HP, WGW, IGARTBA), "Remember Me" is a great tune.

It wasn't recorded as part of the Arrival demos. 2 tracks that were and didn't make the album were Walking Away From The Edge & Lose Myself In You.

Any new Journey songs that were showcased post-98 were in the running to find their way on an album of new Journey tunes, yes? It's very simple. I have no idea what you are arguing over. The band wasn't debuting new Baby songs or new Hardline songs. This is all unused Journey material. I really don't care if Kalodner vetoed "Have a Good Time" or not. All this wealth of Journey material was written in the hopes of getting somewhere recorded down the line. Same deal with "Never Too Late", which was also written by Schon/Blades and didn't land on a record until "Generations".

Arguing? I'm not arguing anything my good man...just stating that that particular song wasn't part of a 13 track demo CDR that was recorded before they went into the Arrival recording process. I'm sure there are plenty more songs out there....

I don't care what 13 tracks some studio exec hand-picked. This is an unused "Arrival" song. If that doesn't sit well, call it an "unused Augeri era song", whatever it is, it was new Journey and at the time, the expectation was that it would end up somewhere. That's why they played it.

Way to derail a perfectly good thread with some dumbass tomato vs. tomahto meaningless bullshit. A rare unused Journey cut is precisely that.

TNC - didn't realize the same co-writers were involved on Remember Me (i.e. Blades)- so you can take that part of my statement out...hate to sound overly argumentative (just some friendly banter I hope), but something didn't correlate for me given the timing for a one-off tune they performed during their comeback tour would be part of the "arrival" album. Curious if they ever announced this song as 'soon to be recorded for our as of yet named new album.' Again not a bad song, but based on the rough audience quality bootleg youtube recording, not anything special either.

Drew - Thanks for the info!

cheers

I think TNC ad Drew are both making sense. As of '99 when the album that became Arrival wasn;t a glint yet, but a new release was planned, things like Have A Good Time and WGW were thought to be included for the sessions. By the time they got down to recording I guess Have A Good Time musta been weeded out, but they must have been intentending to record it, otherwise what's the point? I doubt that is was just another Dixie Highway (live only).

Great info from Drew that the long thought Arrival leftover from Red13 was WAFTE and not necassarilly I Can Breathe.

No prob, man. I just remember in the early days of the Augeri era, every new track that was played live was assumed to be in the running for their next album. That's all I was trying to say. I stil think it's a cool tune. :)

As for Blades work with the band, I think he's created their strongest post-Perry material.

I enjoyed it when I heard it live in '99. World Gone Wild was better rough and live, too.

Agreed. After hearing it live, I thought for sure I was going to be a monster.
First song I flipped to on 4/3/01 and while it was good it feel short my expectations. Could not believe that it was originally scheduled not to be included.

So, confirmation that WAFTE, the most unique and maybe best ballad they ever wrote, was left off Arrival...another bonehead decision by JDK and possibly KS in regards to song choice and what Journey should be/sound like.

The Blades songs make the album for me. Wish they threw Remember Me on there as well. Not expecting anything as catchy to be found on Eclipse.

I wish they had put Remember Me on that album. I wonder what the reason was for leaving it off. Same with the full version of To Be Alive Again with the extended intstrumental jam towards the end that was shortened for the US version. Add Remember Me, and cut the whole thing down to about 10-11 songs, and you have a very strong album.
