Chart news

COH is at #32 on Sweden's iTunes Rock chart. On the overall Swedish Charts, DSB has earned the distinction of "longest chart sitter" at #52.

On Japan's iTunes Rock chart, COH sits at #117.

Haven't spotted COH on the UK regular charts but did see DSB at #10 on the UK iTunes rock chart.

I was checking different South American charts for Human Feel, but it's MIA so far and with that part of the tour complete I'm not sure what kind of presence it will have on charts down there. Also read some reviews of quite a few people "queueing for the lu" when the band started playing the new songs from Eclipse.

It's looks like (as far as Europe) that Journey's biggest challenge will be competing against itself as far as singles are concerned. The original version of DSB just won't die.

sans sing-along choruses and feel good lyrics... this thing is gonna be D.O.A.

COH doesn't sound like a very strong track. Seems like a bewildering decision to release this instead of Chain Of Love.

Who makes the decision of what to release as a single?

I would assume the band and management, with management having a bit more say. Just my guess, though.

Pretty sure the label has the lion's share of the input here in most situations. It might be different with the smaller labels though.

They ARE the label. It's Nomota, Neal's label. At least that's my understanding.

Is there anything on Eclipse that sounds like Journey?
At least ROR had 3-4 songs that sounded like the CD before.

Update: Perhaps Walmart execs have some say in the U.S, but who would make the decision about Europe and South America? Drew, any insight?

The album release may be a bit different, at least in the UK as the tour will be starting around the same time. Releasing Human Feel at the end of the S. American tour seemed pretty strange to me. COH might get a shot in the arm when the album comes out but that's still 6 weeks away, so not sure why they released that one so early either. The continuing presence of DSB on the British charts assures their shows will be well attended but speaks more to the power of the Dirty Dozen than this new direction Neal is going with. I hoped Chain Of Love would be the first release here in the states but they seem hung up on COH being a sequel to DSB and piggybacking off the latter's appeal. I just don't see it.

The band didn't even play Human Feel at their last show in Puerto Rico. Maybe they've rethought their stratagy of having two songs out there and are now putting all their eggs in one basket to promote COH?

I do see City Of Hope getting some decent traction in the UK but I feel that in the end, DSB will still be the Journey tune that commands the charts there.

Here, in the States, I'll have to wait to see.

I thought Andrew said it was Frontiers Records releasing it over there.

Exactly. I liked COH and Human Feel, but I definitely felt Chain of Love and Resonate would probably fair better as singles for Eclipse.

Or maybe there is another reason they didn't play Human Feel. Perhaps a cease and desist order? I am just kidding! It doesn't sound like any other song.

The classic version of DSB is doing better than COH overall. That song won't go away. Curious to see if it jumps higher on the European charts once the tour stats in June as Euro fans get geared up for the dirty dozen.
As I said earlier, Journey is basically competing against its past as far as what people want to hear. A year removed from its popularity exploding all over the UK, Don't Stop Believin' seems to have become an evergreen title on the Europe Charts, similar to the Greatest Hits album here in the states.

In essence, SP doesn't have to
make a new CD, his group is still topping the charts :?:

You could say that. With a tour looming, the UK media don't seem to care who they get to talk as long as they can get another story about DSB out of it.
Perry might want to dust off on his monologue a bit. The old "I owe you money" gag is a bit overplayed.

Bon Jovi, Guns and Roses, Goo Goo Dolls, and even Queen have songs that weren't even released this century, all sitting in the current Top 10 on the UK rock chart, so it's not just a Journey issue.

The 60% of the band that didn't quit over a bullshit injury is getting paid for past and present songs. Cool!

I'm glad Steve Smith is getting something out of all of the DSB mania also. Good guy (from what I've read).

DSB is 10x more catchy. I don't see how COH appeals to anyone but the hardest of hardcores. I could be wrong, though....
